As Lou mentioned there is no need for an EIN unless you have employee's. If your not an employer then there is no reason to have a Employer Identification Number. It's that simple.
Actually there is a reason EIN could be useful even if you do not have employees.
Why would you tell anyone, or everyone your SS# in place of a EIN number which disguises your actual SS#????
I don't give my social to hardly anyone.... I'm not sure who you guys are giving it to and why so many people at that.. There are only a few select wholesalers that require it and most of them will take a resellers permit for verification along with a business license. I think people are in general overly paranoid about the internet and information myself.
If anyone asked for my SS# unless it was the government or state, I would tell them to screw themselves. I would hate to do that, which is why I have an EIN.

Exactly - the resellers permit and biz. license have always worked for me (so far ).
To start my "business checking/savings" account I needed my SS# or an EIN.
I am happy that I did not have to give out my SS#.
SO, to sum up the "EIN" thing....
No...you do not need one.
BUT if you do not feel comfortable giving out your SS# , then get one. simple.
......as of yet, I have only been asked 2 times for my SS#...which is not a lot at all!!!...but I am so glad that I did have my EIN when those 2 times DID come up.
Get it or not.....is all up to you.

Wow. Can't believe all those licenses and things you need to start a business Stateside.
Within reason, you can just start up a business in the UK (and many other countries in Europe) without any form of permits, or certificates. Once your business is up, running and earning you only need to advise the government income tax service and arrange a payment to a social insurance system.
I have already started an online t-shirt business. I have some sales but very sporadic. I have a few designs which I would like to sell locally Wal-Mart etc.
Now, my site is ran by Zazzle or print on demand. I make a shirt set a price, they ship to who ever where ever.
My question is can or would I be able to sell my shirts to other stores. I am not licensed yet but could be etc. I want to be legitimat and all that but I did not have to come up with start up capital. They provide products, they make it, ship etc. Could or am I able to sell on a large level? Do I need tax IDs, other than registering my business name. What else is needed for validation or professionalism?

That can be done here as well under the "hobby" section of the IRS Rules.... locally though for most cities you need to at least get a business license and resellers permit so you can legally collect sales tax and pay that to the state.
You only need to pay sales tax to the state in the UK, if your turnover goes above about £40,000 ($80,000). Most forms of business enterprise here, need no licenses. Think that tends to encourage more free enterprise, rather than having to register with different government departments.

Re: Requirements for starting a t-shirt business?
The permits, license, etc. really depend on your local government. It is more of a tax collecting thing, they all want their cut. Having said that, many businesses in the garment decorating field and gypsy businesses that don't get permits or anything, nor do they collect or pay sales and income taxes.
Hi Fred. Don't think there's a country anywhere in the world, where businesses don't operate outside of the mainstream tax system. Sure there's lots of legitimate businesses that don't declare their income from markets and shows either. When you see how your tax dollar is often misused, I can't always say that I blame them. It does create unfair competition sometimes though.
