Our thought was to offer 5 designs available in every style and then to have 1 design unique for each (infant, toddler, youth). That would be 6 available designs for each piece we sell.
I believe I've seen here that 6-10 designs would be appropriate for launching a screened line of adult shirts. Does our plan for the children's line sound like a good one? Do we need to offer more options?

Thanks so much!
Your plan sounds good to me. If you offer too many designs then people tend to have a hard time making a decision about which they want so they wind up not making a decision at all and you lose out on a sales or sales.
Keep it simple, at least to start. You can always expand your selections later.
It sounds like you have given this thought and it does make sense. You can start out with the number of designs you decided on and then once things get going you will see which ones pick up and which ones are slower, then you can decide to remove some and how many more to add. You will see that people will be quick to tell you/ask you do you have any other designs with ..... (a suggestion they think appropriate.) I always find that by listening to the customers I really get some great input! Lots of luck on your new line!
I think that sounds good for general use. You have to know the buy though. That is to say the person at the retailer who is responsible for buying infant merchandise. I was always in the young men's department and we knew that certain buyers didn't want more than 5 designs at a time.. and they wanted them to be similar enough to put on the same shelf but different enough in tricks, ink and color story to stand on their own. Hope that helps.. not sure if you are even selling to retailers or doing it yourself.

Actually, our main emphasis will be on wholesaling, so I appreciate your advice. Cutting down on the number of designs makes it easier for us to get things going with our artist, too. Thanks again!

Cool then. I would love to see some of the designs when they come out. Sounds really cool!
Personally, I'd advise against the youth line for now, the reason being that you'll need to contact twice as many buyers. Usually, there's one buyer for infants/toddlers and another buyer for youth, even at the same location. Alternatively, you could do the youth line but drop the infants/toddlers depending on what could get more traction. Once you've made some deliveries and have established relationships, you could always add the second line. That way you'll have a reputation and can have the first buyer make an introduction to the other in another department.
