Default screenprinter misses delivery date

OK so I am having a design printed for a college group...Its just a small run of about 45 items. dropped off my products over a week ago on tues and told him I needed them wed of next week so I can deliver on thurs/fri since that will be the last week of school for them. He says no problem. I call on the tues before delivery date to check and he tells me again they will be ready wed. So when I call him the next day to see if they are ready to be picked up, he tells me they went to do the shirts and realized they didn't have enough purple ink (school color is purple) to do them because they do not usually do a lot of purple prints. He tried to find a local place with ink he could buy but could not get a color match. So he has to order it and have it shipped and he cant get the ink I need for 5 days!!! Now I'm screwed cuz i can't get the shirts to the group before they all leave school...and I may have to deliver or ship to individuals who go home for break or have graduated. Also it makes me look bad because I cant deliver on what I promised. Not to mention I was collecting payment on delivery of their orders so there is nothing stopping them with leavin me with the bill.

I am just annoyed because he had the products for over a week and should have made sure that he had the ink needed instead of waiting till the last minute. I know I couldn't run a business that way. My question is to you screenprinters out there is does this sound like acceptable business practices to you and if not should I expect some type of discount?

Thanks

what city are you in?

If I were the printer and i screwed up by not checking my supplies before I promised a delivery, I would take care of the shipping of the individual shirts to the group.

I agree in this Business your word needs to be your bond. If I make a mistake,Iwork to make it right. I realize things happen, but not being stocked for jobs on hand is unexcuseable. ...... JB

I agree. I do printing "on demand". Sometimes I get jammed up on jobs that are all due at the same time or perhaps a printer will go down. I will overnight orders and lose money on a job rather than say I missed a deadline. I agree with everyone else that the screenprinter should suck it up and reimburse you for the postage fees, especially if he plans on having any more business dealings with you.

I'm in the bay area, Ca...well they are a small shop but I have been givin them pretty good business for past year and a half and referring others to them. I will probably try and see if he will give me a discount at least. Just dont think I should have to ask for it. Not very good customer service. I'm at a point where I think I am going to be doing larger orders and need to decide if I should keep using them. On one hand their pricing is good, they are close to me and he is usually pretty helpful when I have special requests but I also seem to always have to stay on top of things to make sure they are done right. They already once printed a batch of sweatshirts for me with the design in the wrong place due to bad communication between him and the person actually doing the screening. Thanks for the input everyone.
