Default Computer help (win): Need for Speed - Can I upgrade or shld I buy new?

My computer is slow. Are there any upgrades that can be done to improve this one? A way to make the computer "think" faster? Move faster? Be better than it was before, haha, without being the 6 million dollar computer?

If I have to buy a new one, I will. But I don't want everything that comes with a new computer. I have my printer, monitor, etc. It's just my system moves too slow.

Here is what I have:
Emachines T4010
2.9 Ghz 340 Intel celeron D
512 Mg Ram
Card Reader
100 HD
DVD/CD-RW

I know the machine can take up to 2 Gig RAM, but I would like the computer to be faster when I go to new places. I would like to be able to load programs like corel and/or photoshop, without it dragging the computer down.

If I have to buy new, what would you recommend as the minimum amount of computer to buy. I don't do videos or gaming. I'd really like to stay under $650.

I thank you so much. I am not literate in this stuff, and am quite lost. Any help is very appreciated, and thanks for your time.

Not sure of the cost these days, but if you can upgrade your ram to the 2 gig max it will help you a lot. Programs should not be as sluggish.

How full is your hard drive? If that does not have to be upgraded, you may just be happy with the extra ram. But if you need another hard drive too, and if ram is going to cost you a couple of hundred, then it may be a better move to invest that money in the purchase of a new box.

Adding more Ram will help a lot, but there some things you might try. here are some free thing you can do. Install c cleaner its removes junk files. CCleaner - Download
just use the defaluts and it safe. Then you need a spy wear checker remover I use Spybot Search and Destroy. The home of Spybot-S&D! . Spywear can slow you down. Then I would run Regseeker it checks and lets you know what needs to be taken out of you Registry, junk in you Registry can also slow you down. I have use all three of these for 5 years there great. Freeware. Just follow the instructions for each, this should help some.

Absolutely do not upgrade that e-machine... That PS was an entryl-level budget machine AND it is now 3yrs old!

It is putting good money into a bad machine. New multi-core procs are alot faster and thay will make the biggest impact in your daily operations. Take the money and put it into a new machine and you will thank me every day for then next 3 years.

What are you going to do in 8 months (after you spend your wad on RAM) and then the P/S croaks, or (ommon on eMachines) the mobo. Your old ram is no good in a new machine.

Save your money and buy NEW! Q6600 is a great processor now. Worth saving up your bankroll for.

I agree with th ram upgrade. You will be amazed at the difference. I also recommend using Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com. Their stuff is guaranteed to work and they have instructions online to install if needed.

Thank you everyone for your responses and time. I really appreciate it so much. I know it takes time to answer folks Q's, so believe me, I thank you alot.

I'm taking everything into consideration, and am going to try those free programs, either way, but for now have one Q:

I would also go with a new machine. You can get a duo core or quad core processor pretty cheap and you won't have to upgrade for quite a while. I usually have a few things running at the same time and with the new multi core processors, it's no problem. You don't want to have to always close out corel to go into another power hog.

It sounds like for new, it sounds like the key is the duo and quad processors, is that right? Thanks again...

Yes. It allows the machine to think about several things at once. Kind of like multitasking we do, but without the stress and anxiety.

With the programs we run today, especially in the graphics world, I believe you need it. The extra ram helps, but the multi core really helps.

Yes, that is the Q6600 processor, but I don't think you can put it into your current Mobo...
(you MAY be able to install a P4 841 if that celeron is an LGA board and not a 468) ]

The 841 P4 is 3.2ghz single core, but has a whopping 2mb L2 cache, compared to the paltry 256kb in the Celeron.

I think it would be best

I think it would be best to find a system built around the 6600, with at least 2gb Ram, and running XP, not Vista

I'll look all the stuff up about the celeron. Thanks for the info.

Yes, I don't want to end up with Vista. I was hoping they still sell with XP somewhere, but when I look over the BB and CC flyers, all I see is Vista. I was hoping if, I do end up with new, that I can just install XP on there and use that instead of the Vista. Is that a possibility? Thnx.

OMG kelly do NOT go with vista!! that's all you'll find 'canned' at any of the big box stores -but find a computer store that will build one for you - they're still able to get XP. plus then you won't have all the extra crap that tends to be on new machines - you get to pick and choose what you need based on YOUR needs. my hubby got in a major hurry last year and bought one of the vista boxes.....it's now sitting in a corner gathering dust and he has a new XP laptop - would he listen to me? noooooooo - bet he does next time! LOL it's a horrid OS, released way too soon - plus it wouldn't run a lot of his existing software. i also would NOT spend a lot of time or $$ upgrading your current system - you couldn't pay me to have a celeron processor - def go duo core minimum and quad core if budget permits....you'll love it! so many of the programs we use are such memory hogs....good luck!

I would get a new one just because I think the celeron is junk hehe. If you are going to spend the money get rid of the celeron thats my opinion and make sure to get at least 2G of ram.
