You can actually dilute water based ink with some water and put it in a spray bottle. That way you will get a way softer hand V.S. spray paint which will feel crusty and hard. You can even cure the water based ink with a heat press or iron if you don't have a press yet. Good Luck!

I used to do this back in high school. The designs never got crusty/hard when I did it, they were actually much softer than a typical plastisol print. I used Jerzee tees (usually 2 for $5 at Michaels) and got the spray paint from ACE hardware (Don't know if you have those near you?) but I believe it was just Krylon spray paint. Have fun!

I've seen good results from using everyday spraypaint on shirts, including stuff I've done myself. It doesn't always work out though - light colors on dark shirts haven't worked out for me, and require at least a few coats to get something noticeable, but that's also when the paint starts to build up and get a noticeable feel.

The difference between aerosol and airbrushing is that aerosol uses gas, which results in more mess (overspray) and less adhesion to the fabric. With airbrushing, you can use basically any paint/ink/pigment, but it's obviously more expensive and will involve more of a learning process before you're achieving nice looking results (but more rewarding as well).

If you do have a crafts store like Michaels near you, maybe check out their t-shirt section, they sell "spraypaint" (I don't think it's aerosol based) specifically for fabrics, and according to the manufacturer it can be used on dark fabrics and is permanent. Can't remember the name, but it's easy enough to find.

i never had any issues with washing and drying either. But I did forget to mention, as someone said above, that I only ever sprayed onto white and light colored shirts. I'm sure it might be problematic to try spraying onto darks.

My sister used to spray paint shirts with stencils, real cool also a lot of people were interested in it. Not sure about washing and drying though.

While I never used actual spray paint from a can to make shirts, I did sell airbrushed shirts for a summer. using an airbrush, compressor and watered down acrylics I got great coverage and great washability. I suggest google-ing AIRBRUSHED T-SHIRTS. It was really fun relativly cheap and was great for tattoo and hip hop inspired shirts. I prefered freehand designs but stenciled designs looked just as good.

A few weeks back I saw a site (Germany I think) with a robotic or CNC airbrush which did murals on car panels, large signs etc. Contour of panels were no problem. System operated straight from computer to painter just like DTG printer. Now I can't find the site. Any clues?

I saw that video as well. It was under a DTG thread I think.
