Got alot of money? Here's a few suggestions for using it towards your t-shirt business.
Buy a screen printer. Don't leave the printing to those big companies. Become your own in house printer.
Hire designers and workers. Since you'll be busy managing the business, hire workers to work the big machines you bought. Hire the best designers to design all the great t-shirt ideas you come up with.
Buy licensed t-shirts. If you wanna sell out with no difficulty you might wanna try selling licensed t-shirts. It shouldn't be hard to sell them since they're popular and there are already people who wan't these shirts.
Open a brick and mortar. Sell your shirts locally in a t-shirt shop you built from the ground up. Make it look crazy so it stands out from all the other clothing shops on the block and make sure visitors feel welcome.
Give out free t-shirts. Go to events and throw hundreds of t-shirts into the crowd. Pick a random online customer each day and send out a t-shirt. Send t-shirts to celebrities.
Hold a contest. Announce that your giving away $10,000 and 50 t-shirts to the 1,000,000th customer.
Pull a big publicity stunt. Stand on top of the tallest building in your city and make it rain t-shirts.
Run an ad campaign on a big site. Cover up myspace with banner ads of your clothing line for a whole 3 months. Make them bold and eye catching.
Run an ad campaign in a big magazine. Put full page ads in your favorite magazine and make sure they're there for at least 5 issues.
Have your products in a celebrity event gift bag. Get them seen by famous people by giving them as gifts. Make sure you're featured in the Oscar's gift bag.
Sponsor an event. Give $5,000 to that local non profit group for their big event and get a spot on their banners and promotional material. On top of that, go to the event and give out free t-shirts.
Sponsor a local celebrity. Pick someone who's pretty famous in your area and give him a whole wardrobe. If he's famous enough you'll see his fans become yours.
Be on tv. Have a commercial on several channels or pay your way to a televised event and wear one of your t-shirts. Pay people who are always on tv to wear some of your shirts.
I think that, that's everyones dream when they start out is to be able to do all of those things or to one day do. Unfortunately for most that won't ever be reality.
Wrong! It doesn't take money to make money. It takes having skills and knowing what to do. It also takes a long term commitment and working hard every day. Remember the dot com crash? Those dot coms had lots of money which was provided by investors, but they were run by clueless young guys who had no experience in business and no idea or plan to make money and that's why most of those dot coms failed! People thought dot coms were automatically going to be huge businesses so they rushed in and invested a lot of money. I believe that new businesses fail because the owners don't know what they're doing. I'm getting tired of people coming here and acting like they HAVE to spend thousands and thousands of dollars. I have spent almost nothing on my t-shirt business and I've made thousands of dollars. I know of some people who spent money on having other people do all the work for them and they failed to learn any skills to be able to do anything themselves. They ended up making no money and giving up on the t-shirt business. There are people who have started multi-million dollar businesses with just $100 in their bedroom. I've read lots of stories like that. So it's really not important how much money you start out with. What's important is YOU and what YOU bring to the table as far as know-how, abilities, skills, knowledge, business strategies, marketing strategies, attitude, work ethic, and knowing what to do and how to do it.

Spot on. You definitely don't have to have money to make money. There are ways to get ahead without money and they involve hard work and commitment, something every entrepreneur should have.

I completely disagree....a nice thought though...but in actuality... even those who start with $100 still put their earnings back into the business, which is in fact "money"....hence taking money to make more money.
Nobody said anything about how much it takes to start out with, but to make more money it takes some money.
for example to get shirts printed you have to buy or make shirts. which will cost money, in one way or another...to sell those shirts to make money.
and your right it does take talent and knowledge, but then it also takes risk, and passion just as well.
but anyways the dot coms failed, because of the overinflated value put on them from the get go... and their complete disregard for the bottom line...2 enormous no-no's in business.
Excellent points. There is a balance. The truth is it WILL take a substantial investment. Time, commitment, money, resources, space...
Money cannot be the key or the end-all or the cure. Few of us have it, but don't let that stop you. It will take time. You can easily take a $1500-$5000 investment and turn it into a job.
To grow a business that can sustain itself, it may take 10 times that, but over time.
How patient are you? How good is your plan, and your numbers?
But you better KNOW what you're doing. You wont have time to learn EVERYTHING as you go.
One thing that you’ll commonly hear people say is that it takes money to make money. However, the truth of the matter is that’s something that poor people say so that they have an excuse for why they can’t make any money – they don’t have any.
You don't even need capital to make large amounts of money. You can be a salesman or a broker and make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year with just a cell phone and a little bit of basic office equipment.
I think that a lot of people on this board are trying to buy success by spending money on equipment. Then they find out that the t-shirt business is way more mentally demanding than they thought and some people give up because it's too much trouble for them. The truth is that your knowledge, abilities, and attitude are infinitely more important than capital. You can lose all your money, but as long as you have a lot of knowledge and abilities, you can make it all back without much problem.

I plan on doing the raining t-shirts thing and retail thing in the next five years. Watch me go! Oh, and of course, buying the **** in screenprinting equipment and hiring people to help me actually make the shirts.
+1 So true. You just gotta be street smart and know now how to handle things. It takes money to make money.
"So it's really not important how much money you start out with. What's important is YOU and what YOU bring to the table as far as know-how, abilities, skills, knowledge, business strategies, marketing strategies, attitude, work ethic, and knowing what to do and how to do it."
I hoestly believe that you can turn a bad idea into a business easier if you have the skills to go along with it, then you can take a good idea with no skills into a business.
When I first got into this 7 months ago, I thought....wow I can make money selling t-shirts for like a couple hundred dollars. This is proving at least in my unique situation not to be the truth.
However the coolest thing about this industry right now is that it is set up to where even the smallest amount of money and design can start a business. I do not know if this is actually helping, or hurting the business. I think tons and tons of t-shirt sites popping up everyday cannot be good for the market, but I am no expert.
Talking to people about my ideas, and shirt designs has given me the knowledge that everyone knows someone that has tried to break into this business. Or so it seems. This takes away my credibility in my opinion also.
By having more money invested in your business it gives you a legitimate appearance. It shows people you are serious about what you are doing.
Although these thoughts are not factual, I am sure some people have had success without putting tons of money into their business upfront.
However all of the successfull companies online reinvest their profits back into the business.
