I am starting a clothing business that is built around philosophy. I have alot of good hand drawn designs already but i do not know if i should go for a high end market and compete with brands like Ed Hardy and Affliction (priced around $60) or a medium market and compete with brands like Obey and GRN Apple Tree (priced around $35).
I am new to and trying to build a clothing line around a philosophy. I would try some designs on both ends but i think the more important part would be the marketing and spreading your philosophy. Either way Go For It!

just spend A LOT of time getting to know your market. If you are unsure of which price bracket to enter into, it may be a sign that you are moving too fast. this forum is a great wealth of information, but it doesn't replace doing your research and homework well! good luck!
brand philosophy (coherent or random designs)
custom designs or stock transfers
put your shirts in kmart or nordstrom
tyson beckford models your clothes or carrot top (who's found wearing your clothes)
how readily available it is
how is it printed
on what is it printed
etc, etc, etc
the higher market end you seek , the more patience required
both are profitable (low end more so)?
if u already have ur designs and are content with them thinks about the above and ask where you fit, if not u can design to whichever level-spec you wish

I would personally start in the middle then as your brand gets known/more popular increase your prices because then you will become a sort after brand so people will pay the high end prices.... just my opinion - hope it helps!
There are only 2 things that matter & thats garment quality and design quality - everything should take care of itself after that. I would try both high end & medium and see which one does better.
I do high end custom blanks. I dont print, just sell the blanks, and the demand is there for a high end printed shirt. Main thing is to get them into some small shops. Once you have a track record of shops selling them you can get bigger shops to carry.
Or you can sell online yourself, or both.
You need to work backwards. Figure out what price you need to sell these at wholesale and retail and then you can see what you can afford to use.
But high end is the trend right now. Try a little of both and youo can offer both price points, hit a different demographic. Adjust your artwork, have high end artwork and med end artwork.
