Just take a look around and you'll see it everywhere.
I don't think there's research on it, but if it's for retail, then just point them to similar places online selling the kinds of t-shirts they sell and you'll see mostly front placements.
threadless, choiceshirts, cafepress, etc.
If you're selling printing services and the client is asking for the logo on the back, by all means let them have what they want.
If they ask for your input, feel free to throw in that it's more common on the front, but I wouldn't "push" it by any means. They are the client and most likely they'll be happiest if you do what you tell them. Some prefer to make their own mistakes.
Some clients do have a preference. Like construction workers like to have the logo on the back and have their phone number on the front. Or other type service organizations.
But if you're focusing on selling a "design" to a retail customer, that design should be on the front.
Forget studies, just go to Target, Walmart and show real world examples
