There's no way to tell from the post if the customer is a "stranger." Why make a long distance call or write an email before just asking him a standard business question?

We are the 'strangers' in the metaphor. My point being, there is no use asking a forum of relative strangers when the only person that could answer the question would be an officer of the club. While there is a chance that his customer is an officer of the club, he would still need to contact the club directly to verify the customer has the authority to grant permission to use the logo. So in short (or not), he must contact the club.

OK, lol, I didn't catch your metaphor.
But that is the point - for all we know the customer is the president of the club and would be happy to supply authorization if he is only asked for it. So, rather than taking the long way home, the simple request that the customer supply authorization seems like the logical first step.

And if the customer misrepresents themselves? Beto is still on the hook. We all know that 99% of the time it won't matter either way. But there is another benefit to working with the club because it gives you a foot in the door to solicit future business.
I have reproduced many hundreds of logos/trademarks over the years and you would be surprised how many times I've been thanked for contacting the company before printing. Companies are very protective of their image and they want to know who is using their marks and how, they also want to insure that the marks are reproduced correctly. Many times it has led to new contacts and new business relationships down the road.

That's a good marketing point. But you should always contact the company before printing so they can sign-off on the job.
I don't disagree with you at all on that point, but you should get authorization as part of the bid process - you should not have to call the company (organization) after the fact to find out if the person you dealt with has the authority to place the order. Since the OP apparently didn't do that, a simple question seems the logical first step to me. If the customer can not provide a PO or some other form of documentation from the club, then let the detective work begin!
