Hey dudes, i saw that someone posted about printing script quotes on T-Shirts and was told to write to the legal department - but what i was wondering (which pretty much is kinda similar to the script quote) is whats the deal with printing Movie stills onto t-shirts?
For example hmmmmm okay Scarface no infact say a picture of Darth Vader with his light saber directly taken from the movie and blasted onto a t-shirt - would i get killed for doing something like that or am i allowed?
Because i see so many scarface t-shirts with a picture of al pachino and the quote 'Say hello to my little friend' but they are not direct pictures from the movie, its just like his head all red or blue and the quote underneath his head or something - so is that a way around it by editing the picture or have they got permission to print from the movie?
Lots of times those things are infringing on copyrights and/or trademarks, each of which CAN get you put in jail. At the minimum, a hefty fine if you're caught.
Taking a scene from a movie is the same. It's not your property, which means you can't legally profit from it.
I'm not sure of the SCARFACE designs you have seen, but I do know most of the ones flowing through stores in the southeast US ARE licensed, so they are in the clear to print and sell. Not to say there aren't infringers out there though.
