Red face Selling T-shirt designs online: how much can I earn?

Hi guys,
I found some websites that I can post and sell my designs online, like allmightys.com and threadless.com. But I am not sure how much I can earn in average for each design this way, and is it fast doing so? Also if I just sell my designs to local businesses, how much would they usually pay for each design?

I think knowing the market prices is important before I start doing anything. Thanks!!

I'm not too familiar with allmightys.com, but threadless is ran as a competition. Your designs must be voted in by members of their site before they are printed.

If you get printed though, I think you get a cash prize of like $1,000, but you definitely will not receive any other type of commission with your payment, and I beleive they sell thousands of each design so really if you wanted to make HUGE money create a good looking site of your own and market yourself.

Good morning all. Does anyone have any national data/figures on how much the graphic t-shirt business generate on average annualy (either revenue or the number of shirts sold?). Can anyone direct me to a website that would provide me those numbers if available? Any infromation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Blaze, those websites you listed in your first post are contests. There isn't a guarantee you will win. Most designs are sold between $50 for simple text - $150 for complex designs. (these are current going rates for Tshirt designs). Some may charge between $35 - $65 / hr for design instead of per project.

The rates are all over the board. Not to down anyone, but there have been a flood of so called "designers" offering their services for so cheap, its unbelieveable! Now these so called designers who just graduated college, have a hard time finding full time positions in design firms, so they opt to sell their services for dirt cheap. As a matter of fact, I've seen a local individual that named himself Dirt Cheap Designs. lol.

This of course is bad for all designers, b/c it's forcing talented designers to lower their rates as well.

Remember, design is valued by the designer themself. In a fantasy world, you can charge whatever you would like!

You have conflicting posts and am curious.

2 weeks ago on these boards you mentioned something about a possible partnership where a friend of yours was going to lease a Brother printer for you.

3 days ago, you said you made 6 million a year (that's over $115K per week).

And in this post you claim you make $10K per week.

I would think you would have no interest in a partnership, nor someone leasing something for you if you could pay for it with pocket change.

I'm not saying you are telling a whopper, but you have no examples of your work except for a few things you created while here to give to others.

Post some of your work, give us an insight into how you are making your money and help others who are struggling by giving good sound advice on how to overcome their rut or slow business.

Like I said, I'm not calling you out, but if you are of the caliber you say you are, I would assume you would have much to offer.

I wonder if he was being sarcastic..... lol maybe not if he claimed 6 million a week ago. Menkey, asking a question like this is hard to answer. It all depends on the individual. It is also good to post a sample of your design.

And no, I do not make 100k a week. But I will keep thinking that in my head. Lets bump that up to 100k a day.

Market prices for designs vary dramatically and there is no way of stating what prices are without seeing type of design. Teddy mentions $50-150, but this is certainly dependent on your skill level and the complexity of design. etc. $50 for a simple text design is certainly much higher than I am used to seeing. These take a quick 5 minutes per design and in my experience go for about $10, sometimes less! The fact is that with software some along the way it has and more and more people self teaching themselves basic designing, simple design skills are far more common than in the past. I don't think this is bad for true designers at all as there is a big difference between basic design skills, and true designer talent. There is a big difference in pay rate too

Did I go off track? Sorry

Hey chadster,
so how much will it be a proper market price for a full graphic design?
I mean yeah skills will probably vary the price, but how about on average or the top price?

Can you show example of your work? Is that allowed here?
