I was just wondering how everyone else came up with their company name. I am having a hard time coming up with a good name for my surf company, it will be mainly surf apparel like t-shirts, hoodies, sweats, hats, etc. If anyone can give me some tips or names that they thought of would be great. If I wind use it I will compensate you for it.
hey ... saw your dilema... what names are you tossing around? ... any ideas? .. my forte is designing logos, and sometimes coming up with names, just curious which way you were headed
Good luck with this, over the last 3 years that I have been thinking of names I went through three. It started out being names that I liked and fit the market, and has since evolved. Try to make it something original and that means something. Its nice that when people ask why you chose that name or what it means, that you have a reason for it, and not that it just "sounded cool"
Look at other brands in your industry and see how they do things. Kirra, Billabong, volcom are mainstream. I believe Kirra is a good surf location, or some geographic region. Sounds good for the uneducated, wanabe surfers if you dont mind me calling them that (or poseurs), and the real deal surfers probably know what it means too. win win
I have a horrible time coming up with names for websites, etc, but for our parent company, we decided to go with something very personal. CEMA is Chani E and Mark A, our first and middle initials.

Other than that, I heard some wonderful advice here on these forums...brainstorm. Come up with 10 words you associate with your business. Then come up with 10 words that you associate with each of those words. Now mix 'em up in all sorts of combinations. Perhaps you'll come up with a name, or even more associations that will give you inspiration.

Im trying to get my company going i have already came up with the name and the advice i would give you and mabey you can get some use out of it is Come up with a word that describes surfing or a surfur look in the dictunary or on the internet.
Both of my sites were inspired from things around me that had a personal meaning for me. One was inspired from my preemie grand baby and one nickname for where I live. I guess I went about it differently, I picked the names first and built my product around them I am still in the process of building my product on the second one.
Like Chani said, brainstorm. Write down every word you associate with your business, your prospects, surfing, beaches, oceans, surflingo, popular surf-sites etc. etc.
For even more input you could use Rhymezone and find related words to the words you came up with. Change the 'Find rhymes' box to 'Find related words'.
A great name may come totally unexpected... but it will come.

SLAMINK...instead of inc sounded better.....hold a contest? I do believe that if you get to personal with the target market you might want to broaden your horizons later which will be hard to do. Like if you were into cars and started to make bicycle parts. some great companies have such simple names...easy to remember. A friend of mine works for "exit realty" the reason for the name is everywhere you look, on the highway, buildings, etc. this is called subliminal advertising.
I like names with double meaning. It gets people thinking, making the name more memorable... Do you offer anything unusual? Any other interests? Just trying to get a feel of what your looking for.
