I was just wondering how everyone else came up with their company name. I am having a hard time coming up with a good name for my surf company, it will be mainly surf apparel like t-shirts, hoodies, sweats, hats, etc. If anyone can give me some tips or names that they thought of would be great. If I wind use it I will compensate you for it.
HMMM....how about Brave Waves....or....Sandy Bottom Surf ....or......Wave-n-threads.....Big Blue surf....gotta be something that makes you flutter....LOL

Other than the .com when starting out, which domain extensions would you try get?
The .net, org etc...
Or the country specific domains such as .co.uk etc?
has anyone worked out a price to get ALL of them? Must cost a few THOUSAND dollars per year to register every variation (assuming they were all available)
To be perfectly honest, in most cases the only one that matters is .com
You could buy the other big two (.net and .org (.org is totally optional)) and possibly .co.uk if you really want to protect yourself from cyber squatters, but I wouldn't bother with the rest, especially for people in the US.
If there's a South Africa-specific domain extension, I might buy that since that's where you are, but you don't need to get too crazy with it.
Well, I didn't see that a company name had been settled on yet, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. I've participated in naming 5 companies now and any number of products. Here's what I've learned.
First you need to brainstorm a list. Throw anything and everything on the list. Use Babelfish or something and see what any English words you might want to use are in other languages. Also brainstorm about what your company is and what it will do and then add those ideas to the list.
Once you have a big list, start narrowing it down. Come up with 15 or so choices that you like. Once you've done that, do a trademark and domain name search on all these choices. Do this now before you settle on one name that you really like. Take it from me, if you find a name you like and then find out you can't use it later, it will be that much harder to come up with another name.
Checking your potential names for trademark and domain name registration will probably knock a few off the list. After that I'd Google the potential names as well. This is mostly to see if anyone has a similar name and how much competition there is for page rank on this name. This isn't at all scientific, but can help.
Eventually you'll get down to a couple of names you like. Live with those for a few days. Use them in conversation, make up some fake letterhead, play with logo designs and figure out if you can live with this name for as long as this company exists. Naming a company is a lot like naming a child. The name has to be something you can imagine yourself saying a million times without hating it.
Forgot to add, the company name has to be one under which you can expand. If your name is too narrow and you want to move into other areas someday, you'll either have to change the name or keep explaining why your surf clothing company now sells golf apparel. (Cheesy example but you get the idea).
For a business, for the most part, if the .com is taken, I move on to a new name. I don't even bother registering a .net.
Even if you tell people to go to a .net address, it's just habbit for people to type .com, so you could either be missing out on business because people can't find your site, or you could possibly be sending your customers to your competitors!
The other thing is that if it IS a registered business, they may be able to get you for cyber-squatting. Just not worth it for me.
If anyone needs any names let me know. I went out and wasted my money on name razor (which didnt help me at all).. I figure SOMEONE might as well get some use out of it!

Did you get your name another way? I used this and it solved my four month problem of no name. Are you still nameless?
FYI: If you choose a business name like "surf shak" and want to start selling golf clothes. You do not have to change your name. All you need to do is get a Trade name. for example.
Surf shak - DBA(doing business as) - fairwears
My company is Fractured clothing and Design
We have the following DBA's:
Fractured Apparel
Fractured Sports
Artists under fire studios
Blue Bullet
If you find a name you like sit on it for a few days and if you still like it go register it. Even if you already have a Company name, if there is any possibility that you might want to use it later then register it.
