don't use any typical surf words or term. think out of the box and think freely. thats the way to get original names. Otherwise your brand or name will not stick out.
I didn't know much about domain names, and someone recommended godaddy.com, which is the site I was using... At one point they wanted $8,000.00 (yes, eight thousand dollars!) for a name I really liked. I believe for that particular name, I actually checked the box where you have the option of choosing .com, .net, .orgfirst, then I typed in the name... It was almost like the site realized that I wasn't just browsing, but actually wanted to make an immediate purchase! I was very disappointed...
Other times, "my names" were offered to me as an auction, starting at $200.00!
I later tried another search, and it did the same thing but wasn't nearly as aggressive as godaddy (can't remember the name, but it may have been register.com). I guess I learned the hard way... I suppose I will just wait and see if the site eventually gives up. Have no idea how long this will take, hopefully just a couple/few weeks as Bobbie explained.
Anyway, hope this makes sense - lol. Thanks for sharing guys!
Thankfully my registrar doesn't practice that sort of business. I can search for domains and buy them when I want to, whether it's right then, a day later, or a week later.
I woudn't doubt that GoDaddy is doing this, too. Somehow I got an email about a domain that I had on backorder with them. As soon as it became "free" it was snatched up again and I got an email that I could buy it for $200. I'm now thinking that GoDaddy might have bought it themselves and sent me that letter under another name.
Well, at first I tried to make the name of my company somewhat related to what I'm trying to sell to the public like think of the theme of your clothes and if theres not a really a theme then think about the message your trying to send out to the public. Honestly...the name I have now does not mean a thing but its catchy. It makes people want to click the link to find out what it is. It doesn't even have to be a word but you should choose something that you think people will remember easier. Thats all I know about choosing a name. :P
personally I think you could just be very creative in a marketing sense. When I registered my business I had already done lots of research and was/am a very big fan of marketing. One of my favourite things to study actaully, very interresting stuff.
anyways I decided to go weird with my name. I find people remember weird, they will always remember the odd. I own Goats of Fury, people definitly remember it. We dont even have a goat as our mascot, it is just completely random, people remeber it, so it works.
I am probably going to make a mascot to print on our shirts, but I am having trouble drawing it, so I will probably outsource in the near future.

This practice should be illegal!
Chani, would you post who your registrar is? I think I should like to switch from Go Daddy, just in case my term runs out before I renew. Thanks a million (or $200, hehe.)
Oh, by the way, my company name is one thing, and my www name for folks to look at my web is another thing. The company name is too long for folks to type, and could be misspelled. I used a shorter name for the www, registered both and pointed the short one at the company name/website. So I could be in for $400 if I somehow don't renew on time. Yikes!
They've been really good to me. The only problem I have with them is they don't provide any discounts to anyone unless they have 50 or more domains registered with them.
Wow, that is alot of domains!! I've already bookmarked them and will prepare for the incoming headache of trying to relearn what the heck that all means again. I am so computer/technical illiterate, but I thank you again. I don't like companies with a shady disposition.
Some of the best surf companies have the weirdest names. Billabong, Volcom, QuikSilver, Ripcurl, ...Lost,
So I am trying to think outside the box I think I got a cool name now just do not want to post it yet trying to get a trademark or something going for it.
