I reckon you should look at other ideas. I came up with mine from a poem I wrote about the waes always being better the day before. A friend of mine went for impact and called it SLUT and the clothes he makes reflects that. Another company I know called themselves Hager vor which is rough sea in cornish. Look at the clothes and take inspiration from hat and your surrounding rather than thinking of a catchy name. Also they say short words are more memorable but look at the two best billabong and quiksilver they´re aren´t short. Where do you live and are you just doing surf wear or extreme like snowboarding and skate wear? Good luck. I like words that reflect the sport too. SURGE, CORAL, OVER THE FALLS etc
We brainstormed and left the list sitting around the house for a week or two. Each of us picked the top five and then after adding some more, we did it again until we had it down to five or six possibilities. At that point, we sent out a mass email to friends and family and asked them to vote. The clear winner became the name of our company. It is: Whatever Works!
Registering my company was held up by four months of no name. After many many brainstorming sessions, I was still not satisfied with my results.
I went to the web and signed up for NAME RAZOR. After two hours tooling around in there I had a perfect name. When I went to the Small Business Developement meeting, one of the things they help you with is naming your company. When we discussed what I propose to do, he absolutely loved the name, and I kind of consider his opinion professional. This is for my other business, which is not shirts. But Name Razor was my way out and after four months of filing up notebooks, I had the name. It was worth the money. I don't remember how much, maybe $20. But it is like brainstorming with a computer helping you shuffle and find alternates. I loved it. Good luck.
Hey, I just googled it again and if you search Name Razor, you can find it for $14.95. This amount of money got me past that point. Of course, you have to check with your state to see if the name is already registered to someone else, but it helps to have this software waiting for your next try.
karolina thank you a lot for taking the time to help me out I really appreciate it and it did get me thinking. And I am sketching out some designs now and I got a couple of company names I am thinking about one starts with an S so i am drawing logos that incorporate an S into it.
Girlzndollz I will check out name razor, thank you for suggesting it.
Glad I could help a little... Wish I knew a bit more about surfing though :0) You may have already thought of it, but you could make your S look like it's made of several waves rising into the shape of the letter S. Just a thought...
Are you in California (just curious)? I'm in Michigan, where it's currently a freezing 3* F. Anyway, let us know if we can be of any other help. I enjoy this kinda thing! Good luck with your name, it's a big deal and important that you take your time. If it doesn't feel right, keep thinking...
When I searched for my name (still haven't found it actually), I used of those domain search sites. At the time I didn't realize how these sites work, and unfortunately I learned the hard way, by checking the availability of a name more than a couple times... But only to find that the domain site would then obtain the name, and try to sell it for an unbelievably high amount. I regret not immediately buying it, because now I cannot afford the name I really liked... Just a heads up!
Thanks & Have a great weekend. We're all excited to hear from you ~ Karolina
Karolina, if you just wait a few weeks they will eventually ditch the domain as long as no one else buys it. That is what they do, they will buy it and then reverse the purchase after a certain amount of days so they get their money back. Just wait em out

Thanks Bobbie, I really appreciate you clarifying that! I had no idea, this is great news! I am very excited, thank you so much! It has given me hope - lol!
Have a wonderful night ~ Karolina
yep network solutions does this all the time, as soon as you search they purchase, but then they throw it back. I forget who listed it but if you search for network solutions in the threads you will find one that has a link that shows how many days they usually keep them.

Wow, that stinks. What domain site were you using? Do you mean the part when you have to check if your company name is available as a .com? I used Yahoo Webhosting. That didn't happen, but, when I wanted to switch to GoDaddy for hosting, Yahoo had my name with another company that put a one year lock on it. I waited a few months for the one year mark to pass before moving to GoDaddy. Is that what you are saying happened? You were trying to find an available name and they grabbed it? If you remember which domain search site you used, will you post it?
I hope to clarify for anyone unfamiliar with Name Razor, that was software I purchased and downloaded. It says now it can do domain searches in the ad, but it didn't back when I used it. I just recently uninstalled it.
I didn't want to spend money to come up with a name, but it worked wonders for me and there were alot of good returns that came back and I just kept playing with them. Alot of things I didn't think of after 4 months of waking up with a notepad next to my bed at 2 am with a new name - haha. Some of you know what I'm talking about!!

Is that normal for domain search sites, Bobbie? I haven't needed to do that in over a year or more, is it new or was I just lucky?
Here is a link to the thread that has the link for techcrunch, Network Solutions busted! , This tells how it works if you click on the techcrunch link and look at jan 19th post. Always remember to check you domain you want for your company name at a place that does not do this. There is also a list on that link that shows all the different domain companies and how many domains they reverse that they buy, this will give you an idea if they are doing this. Obviously if they are purchasing alot of domains and then reversing a high number you can bet they are doing this practice. It is a very good list on that link. Definately something to watch for when purchasing your companys domain.

oops it is the jan 10th blog on that site, I put the wrong date. I will find it and then edit to put the link in a minute.
OK here is the correct link, and if you go down in the article and click the green word here, it will show all the different companies and how many domains they purchase. It is worth keeping this in mind when coming up with a company name. Hope this helps some of the members here.

Thank you for the post, Bobbie. I went to the thread, read that, and then went to the article and learned a whole bunch of stuff, but couldn't find the article. I'll check back if you update the thread, but either way, Thank You so much for this post. That is really super of you to post it, and it is a horrible darn shame this happens, but at least you gave everyone a way around it, what great information to be aware of.
What a pity they do that. Thanks again, Bobbie for the loophole and Karoline for bringing it up. Appreciate both. Good night, ladies.
