I somehow got on this mailing list at tshirtriches.com. (I must've had one too many beers and signed up at 2am or something).
ANYWAY...he's got a video on youtube about making money in the tshirt biz. He shows you how to heat press a tee shirt using pre-printed transfers. Not very compelling stuff, to be honest. Most of the video is filled with him repeating himself and saying "uhhh", and "umm".
Moving on: The emails that I receive are telling you how he uses popular tv shows to base his christian designs on. This throws up a red flag for ME, as that's a very grey area to be playing around in.
Example: He decides to use the PrisonBreak logo from FOX TV's show of the same name. He's found a font that is almost identical to the show's logo. Then, he searches through the bible to come up with a quote that kind of ties into that name, PrisonBreak".
The artwork is now completed, I won't post the image here as I don't want any trouble personally for sharing other people's work, but just imagine:
PRISONBREAK (logo across chest of shirt in white)
"No matter your situation, God will break you out"
Acts 16:25, 26
Now I know you can do pretty much as you please with bible verses, but using the logo from a television show WITHOUT permission or paying royalties?
I can't honestly take this guy seriously when he's advocating the use of trademarked property without permission.
It does, however, show that many people selling similar stuff on Ebay believe that this is OK to do. And this guy is pretty much telling people that it's OK to do.
Would you want to be mentored by this guy? (and one has to wonder if he believes God will deliver him from litigation as well)
I happen to run accros that video as well and umm! umm! umm! though it was crap. all this is to get you to buy his e-book that he is selling. all the info that he says he will give you in his book, you can pretty much get it here for free. the transfers that he was using in the video were from pro-world and probably any other transfer place that has stock ones. the only thing that was intresting was he says he will show you were to get shirts for like .69 cent something like that wow! does anyone now how much you would have to order to get that price.
Hello to all
I'm fairly new here and I haven't started my business yet but I wanted to understand that using the words like prison break can be wrong and you can get into trouble could you please tell me why?
Thanks Roberta
Because it is the name of a tv show and trademarked. It is illegal to use anything that is trademarked within your designs unless you own that trademark or have bought a license to use it. Hope this helps Its not so much the words prison break (although those that may have been trademarked also so dont mark my word on that ) but he also used a font that looked like there logo therefore copying their trademarked logo. That is illegal.

To put it simply, Roberta, it isn't his idea. Copying a design (or any art/idea for that matter) or recreating it in it's likeness for profit is illegal. To put it bluntly- it's stealing. And while that may not be the creator's intent, that is what is implied because of the fact that it reminds the viewer of another piece of work- in this case, Fox's "Prison Break."
The unfortunate part about all of this is that there is a fine line between inspiration, recreation, and parody. So, while none of us know the creator's true intentions, we as a majority perceive the work as either an unlawful recreation or a parody (which, I personally believe, parodies a small step above unlawful recreations, as far as t-shirts and clothing go at least.).
Hope that helps you out a little, and welcome to the forums!
Either way, non profit or not, it cheapens the trademark's value to let just anybody use it and profit from it. They sell these shirts, it's not like they give them away.
And...as an aside...If I wanted to make an NFL Tshirt for my son, I can likely get away with it, but it's still not legal. I didn't get permission to use their logo.
