It's really something each business has to decide for itself. Overall, it's worth it. Specifically when you're just starting out and may not be able to afford $400-$1000 in legal fees, you might be better spending money where it really counts (inventory or advertising for example).

By common law trademark, and by business registration. A trademark is (much) better, but it's not the only way to sue someone.
