Hello everyone, I am still new to this, so my questions may seem stupid. I eventually will be selling t-shirts with my own logo. I obtained a sales tax permit to buy blanks. One web site, www,epacificsports.com also asked me for a copy of a Federal Tax ID and business license. How and when should i obtain these things. Most sites just ask for my sales tax permit number. Should i go ahead and get a business license and Federal tax ID?
You only need a federal Tax Id if you have employees. All you need from most companies is a resale number from your state so you can collect or not collect sales tax.
Thanks lou, Do i need a busines license? And while i have your attention, maybe, Have you ever used hanes tagless shirts? If so, How do you go about getting off there screen printed logo on the inside of the neck so you can place your own? One day, i hope i will be able to help you guys with questions.
You need a fictitious names from your county depending on your state and you may need a city license depending on your city. No to the Haynes question. I do not use any Hines stuff. But that's just me..

Brad, it's best to get a federal tax id if you are a legal business. A federal tax id is not only used if you have employees, but rather to protect your social security number. If you have a business and a vendor asks you for your social security number, you'd give them your tax id so that you don't go spreading your ss number everywhere.
Side note: epacificsports asks for a resale number, and by chance if you live in Oregon, or a state that does not collect sales tax, you do not have a resale number. I was on the phone arguing with epacificsports about us not having a resale number as Oregon doesn't have sales tax....Took me 30 minutes to convince them that it was true....lol
Another thing, you don't take off the heat pressed label in the hanes tagless. If you want your own screen printed tags on your shirts, you'd have to cut off the tags that come with it and either replace them with your own tags or screen printed tags. Good luck!
So a federal tax id protects my socail securuit number? And you cannot remove the tagless label on the hanes because it is burned in the fabric? What about abusiness license, do i need that? I have tried several t- shirts: Gildan not soft enough, Anvil heavy weight is ok, Hanes heavyweight is pretty good, obviously i cant use the Hanes tagless because i want to use my own label. Do you guys have any sugestions, especially you badalou, on a soft t-shirt that doesnt shrink to nothing?
One las thing, should i use my logo name for my business name? I did that on my Texas tax permit and also to several t-shirt wholesalers, is that OK??
Check with your local chamber of commerce, they will be able to tell you exactly what you need. It varies from city to city.

You may want to ask this question in a separate thread. Not everyone reads every thread in the forum.
People reading the title of the thread may think it's about Federal Tax IDs. If they don't have expertise in this area, they may not think to read further (which would mean they would miss your question about soft t-shirts)
Try the Hanes Beefy Tee (softer than the tagless because it's ringspun) or the Alstyle 1701 t-shirt (ringspun soft). Basically, if you want soft, look for ringspun in the t-shirt description
