Default protection of my design

I am just starting out and am planning to show my shirt designs ( which are unique in their stitching patterns and layout, not in a particular design affixed or printed by me onto the garment) to other bigger designers/manufacturers/companies who can help me get my stuff produced in larger volume/into stores/ or perhaps linked up with their established brand name.
how do i protect my designs from being stolen during these meetings? i dont want to meet with someone, have them tell me no thanks, and discover that they are producing my design without me. is there a document that exists already that i could have them sign? or something that i could write up myself. just wondering if anyone knows how this works.
im not sure about the cost of copyright/trademark/patent. but i dont have a ton of $ to spend, nor can i wait months or years.
thanks

Your could try getting them to sign an NDA, but by the sound of it you don't have anything novel enough (in the legal sense) to warrant legal protection. Still, copyrighting is cheap (enforcing it isn't) and might do the trick so that's always worth a shot too.

Signing an NDA is probably your best bet. Copyright your work is also recommended however it won't stop anyone from stealing your core concept and tweaking it a bit so that it can argued to be original.

Lastly,
Johnny Cupcakes had a design copied by retail giant Urban Outfitters.

So the point is, if a succesful designer like Cupcakes can get his idea stolen, anyone can.
