Hi guys-

I'm totally new here but I think I have a cool idea for an apparel line. Since I want to get started on it soon, I was wondering how I should proceed from here. Since I have no way to get started I would imagine a software program would be my first purchase. I'm on a Mac so I have no idea how popular that platform is but it seems that illustrator is sort of my only choice correct?

Now once I design my stuff I obviously have to have a way to get it printed. Do you guys recommend contacting a printing shop locally (if so what kinds of printing should I look into ) or should I purchase my own printer (would that save more in the long run)?

I have a bunch more but I guess this is it for now.

I would recommend getting a vector software such as Illustrator, Corel Draw or Freehand, or look for a free vector program on the net, also you might get a pixel program such as Photoshop. You would then have to learn it and you might check here for tutorials. Then, as you are just starting, I would suggest contacting a screenprinter. Depending on the design, you might also try vinyl transfers.
Start by outsourcing the job as you have no experience. If you see it really works, you might want to buy equipment LATER.
If you think you are not too creative or wont learn the design programs, then hire a freelance artist, it is of no use to buy a software if you are not going to make the most out of it.

I would definetly outsource your printing before purchasing all the equipment yourself. You want to see if your stuff sells before you invest BIG. This way your investment in your idea is a much more reasonable amount dollar wise. Our initial investment in our equipment was $12,000. It will cost you less than that to have the first few ideas printed for you.

It's the best choice anyway, so I wouldn't sweat that.

Yep, a local screenprinter is a good way to start.
