what program/setup do people usually run when setting all this up.... when i was in the architecture/model building industry, keeping records was easy....but not going to retail/etc i think i need a better system or keeping track of things...... payment/tax numbers/i.d. etc....
This is a question I was asking a friend of mine earlier today. For an e-commerce business, can Quickbooks seperate taxable sales done within a state and non taxable sales done outside of the state of your business? And can it seperate wholesale sales and retail sales. I attended a quickbooks class through SBDC and they were not much help.
I believe QB will handle everything you both mentioned and more. My partner & life long partner handles that side of the business. Ill see if she will enlighten us all a bit tomorrow. If she can get away form our new baby for a moment
Check out Invoice 2002 at Invoice! WinPro Invoicing for the Small/Home Business it lets you do invoicing, keep track of your customers, vendors, etc. I used it a while back and it was very easy to use. I see they offer a Invoice Windows Pro now which will also operate with a cash drawer so essential you can use it at shows if you can set up your computer to print invoices, etc.
Another alternative is Simple Business Accounting (not a lot of frills gets the job done). I use this one currently to type in my tax stuff at end of year (i should to it as i get transactions) but can't seem to be that organized.
Of the 2 i like Invoice 2002 best but the Simple Business Accounting lets you type info in fast so i use it as i said at end of year for just typing in sales and expenses.
I have quickbooks but it takes you through so much to set up I just got frustrated and stopped. I only used quickbooks for processing credit cards through but now that they have stopped allowing you to do that in the version i have i don't use it at all. It's just a piece of software gone to waste for me.
Disclaimer: I am not affliated with the software sellers and do not get anything from mentioning them. I am not responsible for any business dealings anyone has with this companies.
i'll look into it...... i'm just getting used to the layout on this site so hopefully i'll figure out how to navigate a bit better...i.e. search/forums/etc

Yes quick books can seperate taxable and non taxable sales done outside the state. It's all in how you set it up. I use quick books and I love it, the hardest and longest part is in setting up your business accounts, invoice, vendors etc., but once you have input all your information it will do all you want and more. "oh i forgot to mention this is the P.O.S quick books, don't know about the class, but customer service for business will walk you through setting it up. They were very helpful with me.

I use quickbooks pro at the sighn shop and its easy to use once you get it set up.. set up itself is not hard.. just takes time to get all your products in and such if you sell a variety of things.
