Default Dye your own?

Hi everyone. I'm new in the biz and have yet to order my first batch of blanks. I know that white tees are the cheapest. I was wondering if it was worth it to order a large qty of white tees and dye them myself. I'm even thinking that it may add a bit to the "character" of the tee by saying that they're "hand dyed." I would also prefer to do it using organic dyes. Whatcha think? Thanks.

i don't know the first thing about hand dyeing. but i do think it would catch my eye if i saw shirts for sale that where hand dyed. especially if the dying caused a vintage or rough look. neat idea, hope someone on here has some experience

I think only you could decide that.

For me, it wouldn't be worth it. The costs for blank colored t-shirts aren't that much more than white t-shirts. Not enough that you'd save money/time by buying white tees and dying them yourself.

Now if you're not doing it for the money or time savings and you're doing it to get a special color or to "add character" to your line, then those might be reasons for doing something custom.

Not sure you would even want to get white tees. Most companies offer shirts that are Prepared For Dying (PFD) If you wnat to go this route, you should look into the cost of those instead of white.

Good luck,
Ken

PFD is generally more expensive than white, plus the cost of the dye, plus the labour, plus the cost of the equipment (even hand dyeing requires more than just your hands). All in all, if you're doing it to save money... well that would be an interesting proposition since it would cost you two or three times as much per shirt.

Personally I don't think it's worth it. At small quantities, it's a distraction from more important work you could be doing, at large quantities you couldn't possibly keep up. It might be nice to do a few limited editions here and there, but dyeing is, for the most part, best left to dye houses.

I actually hand dye all my garments and the look is completely bad a*ss, plus i get controlled results that a dye house could never pull off- and i do small to about 50 pieces with no problems.
