What makes you decide whether to put your design or slogan on the back or front of the shirt ?
(other than a small sleeve or pocket design that is designed to go in those spots)
There are several factors that go into deciding on image placement. Size has a lot to do with it, a small image will look out of place on the back but will be fine on the front. Some large images will look out of place on the front. Usually if you have a large image on the back you will have a pocket print on the front that corresponds to the rear print, if you only have the rear image, as Fluid said it "Just seems unfinished."
We just let the customer decide where the print is placed as we print on demand.
Ultimately this is the case with us yet I always offer my opinion before running a job. I hate sending goods out of the shop that I am unhappy with yet the customer is always right.

I agree...making suggestions moves the sale along. There are many times folks pick out the stupidest fonts, placements etc. I really they rather just let me put it together for them but that is the downfall of doing customs on the fly. I limit our font book severly on the road (40 or so) just so the customer doesnt get overloaded. Even 40 fonts is probably way more than they need to see.
If the design is large, put it on front if it is for non-commercial use.
Put it on the back if it is a work uniform. One of my customers put it this way. "If the worker is not bent over, he/she is not working."
You want the logo/phone number to be seen while in use, so it needs to be big on the back. I do try to sell a left chest for the front of the work shirts.
