is every design in the name of jesus is under some sort of copyright?
im trying to start up my business and I just want to know what stuff is illegal to put on my shirts, and if there is a way, can i get permission somehow?
p.s. what are the chances of someone actually catching me in this act(copyright)?

Anything you own the rights to. Anything you designed yourself, had made for you, or licensed.
You get permission by asking. If it's the design of a friend or non-professional, it might even be free. If it's owned by a large company, it could cost tens of thousands (or, more likely, a big NO)

Depending on who you infringe and how successful you are, large.
If you're planning to build a business based on illegality, if far quicker and more profitable to just become a drug dealer.

well said.. Monkey.. the thing that people dont seem to relalize is that taking someone elses designs and using them .. Is the same as stealing.. and they can be hit with huge fines.. Have all of there equipment confiscated and even face jail time.. IT is against the law..
There are many big companies out there that activily pursue copyright infringers..(sp) Disney, Harley Davison and many other will go after you big time.. along with many other companies too numerous to mention.. There have been cases where all of companies supplies and equipment have been taken from them.. and if you were to say transport them to another state.. your vehicle could also be taken..
Is it worth the risk for a few dollars.. Hell NO.. and besides which its ethically wrong.. and im a big believer in karma
Good, will someone inform cafepress of this? They have ripped no less than 4 of my designs, and each and every time I inform them of it with they're helpful "Copyright infringement contact us" link, I get a well-written letter explaining that their guys have the right to use any design they want, even licensed images I own the copyrights to!
Ebay, though I despise them, was always good about pulling copyrighted designs off real quick.
(BTW, if you can't beat them, join them. I did finally open a cafepress site.)
I try to remind myself how I feel if I see one of my original designs being used, and that keeps me from wanting to use others' even if its a big, faceless company.

I can't imagine you getting that response from CafePress.
I've contacted them several times about images and they are very quick to respond and take the images down if you can prove you own them.
I'm not sure what you mean by "licensed images you own the copyright to"?
Are those images you created? If so, and if you can prove it, they will take it down.
every clipart package will have a licensing agreement. Most you do not have to sign it is just stated on the site, included with the literature or in the front of the clipart books.
wow, i didnt think this post was gonna generate this kind of attention thanks for all your comments guys, i got all my questions answered keep going if you like, its interesting to hear all these different opinions
What about using reference images? I sometimes find myself taking pictures from google as reference images for my vector graphics. Can i get in trouble for this? And what about downloaded fonts I use in my designs?

Reference images is a gray area. If it looks like the original graphic and the original graphic creator has a problem with it, you could have problems.
If it's just a generic picture of an apple that you used google images to find a photo since you didn't have an apple in your house, it's less likely to be a problem.
If it's someone's customized logo that you used for "inspiration" and you changed a few colors and words, you are more likely to get into trouble. There's all kinds of areas in between. If in doubt, call a lawyer.

It's generally OK to use fonts in your design. Most fonts come with a "license agreement". Just read that to be sure or ask the font author.
