Hi there! I found a few threads on painting tshirts that were very useful, what I'm wondering about is if anyones used just normal spray paint and a stencil? And if so what the washability's like? There's no forum just for fabric painting etc, so I'm assuming it's a bit outdated now?
If you are talking aobut the regular stuff you get in a can, I think it holds pretty well. I've gotten some on my clothes before that didn't come off. I'm not sure what the color durability would be though.

In one of my 'research moments', I wondered the same thing...so I took a screen home with me. Layed it on a shirt and sprayed through the mesh with whatever spray paint I happened to come across in the garage. The results were pretty poor. Most of the paint just collected on the mesh of the screen. I believe I was using a 110 mesh at the time. Seems like you would need a much coarser mesh. Maybe someone else has had better luck.
I have a question. What effect would you be trying to achieve by doing this? Not to sound harsh (cause I've wondered about it too) but I always come back to the same place in my thinking. If it's going to look like something I can screen with a squegee and ink (mediums we know and can control)....why bother? Seems like you could achieve almost any effect you can think up by manipulating the art, ink, and screen. Just my couple of pennies.

Yes, I've thought that as well. Why bother messing with this "fad" type of look when it might be easier replicated with regular screen printing? However, it might have looked cool and been different than regular screen printing, or easier to provide different looks ie. colors without washup. Of course, air brush artist do this with their masks. I was just hoping to see what I could come up with. Time to move on to the next project.
I tried painting a shirt with regular chrome spray paint. It came out easily, not the whole thing, but you could see the difference. I will try some textile spray paint this week or may be next one. I hope it holds good.
Ive sprayed alot with cans and found they do fade and crack with washes,But they probably would add a neat texture to screen over with another design,I wonder if you could add fabric paint to a spray bottle and spray on offending (blank) shirt.Airbrush artists use masking to paint shirts but freehand works great.I seen awhile back where a person would tie one end of shirt(to anchor) and by twisting, scrunching the fabric they would spray the shirt with different colors to get a tie-dye effect, twas neat.Waterbased would leave a nice hand to print graphics etc. over.
my thoughts.
I've been wondering the same thing, about painting shirts. I've seen paint made specifically for spray painting shirts in a craft store. They had several different colors, and it seems like it would work pretty good. Most craft stores have this type of paint.

I wasn;t really thinking about achieving any kind of "look" in particular, just wondering if this was another option to think about, especially if it was cheap/easy/durable. I hadn;t really considered the fabric paint thing at all then found a few threads on here that were of interest, someone mentioned spray paint and I though it would be interesting to see if anyone else had done it as I hadn'f if before.
Thanks for your thoughts people, it doesn't sound like it would be that good a plan! Might try it on an old tshirt just out of interest though.
