Go to your nearest TX Comptrollers office or their website to get a sales tax ID# which is really all you need to get started. Oh and it's free to get one of these.

Yes, you can do it online, but....depends on how comfortable you are doing it where you can't ask questions.
You must have a DBA unless you are using your name as your business name, think it's about $10-$15, but it's a business startup deduction.
I went to our County tax office for the DBA and the tax id# because I had questions...however, I did get the form off the internet and filled it out ahead of time...no charge on the tax id#.
Depending on your City, you may have to get a City business license...can't help you there, as I live in an unincorporated town and didn't have to get that...just the DBA and Tax id A city license, if needed is also deductible as a business expense.
It seems far more difficult than what it actually is...it really is pretty easy. We did ours in about 1 1/2 hours and that included driving time (our county had the DBA and tax id stuff in different buildings in different parts of the County!!
