most of the services are too expensive so i'm wondering if anyone here has done it themselves and could give me some tips.

The cost of the trademark itself is pretty expensive. The fees for doing a professional search and filing aren't too much above that.

Also, it's going to cost you money to police and monitor your brand so you so you can keep your trademark, so you may want to work into your budget some legal fees.

I think if you read some of the older trademark threads, you'll read about members who did the filing themselves.

Yes, I did it myself. I think it was $350. Just took some time to fill in the forms online, but it wasn't too bad. I've since gotten some legal advice about people filing for trademarks that are close to my stuff, but I haven't paid a lawyer (yet). I'll be the first to say that sometimes you just gotta pay, but since I didn't have the money when I filed, I just tried it myself. If it is an "easy" trademark, with no close ones already filed, I'd say to do it yourself. But if there could be issues, get advice!

Heh. Well, for those in the United States I would recommend borrowing a book or two on the subject in the local library prior to filing an application.
