I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on the things I should read/learn about to start designing and making t-shirts.
I have NO idea where to start. Are there some "stickied" threads where I can read up or some important website with tutorials?
For what I do know, I know how to use Photoshop, and I am learning how to use Illustrator right now.
Any help in the right direction would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
What exactly do you want to do? Do you want to sell your own designs via a website?
A good list of "starting out" type topics can be found in the start search tag and starting search tag. You'll find some "How to start a t-shirt business" and other great topics about how to get started in various aspects of the business.
If you do a forum search on any particular step of the process, you'll find lots of information about that step.
Any specific question you have that you can't find the answers to, feel free to post and ask.
Thanks! I was wondering how this forum worked. I guess I'll try using the "tag search."
I would like to sell my own designs via a website. I've heard about spreadshirt.com and a few other places that let you upload your designs and create an Online store free. BUT, thats the only thing I know about getting started. I'm not too sure how I would create/sell my designs other than utilizing a online store like that.
I'm still having a hell of a time learning illustrator as well. Photoshop isn't a problem but those vectors in illustrator have me confused to no end.....
Just a question, do most of you guys/gals who make t-shirts
a) Make the t-shirts yourselves via screen-printing or something else?
b) Buy them from a maker in bulk and sell them?
c) Use a online store, and create the designs?
d) Others???
I'm curious because I'm trying to figure out the best way to start. The idea of screen printing at home is very very attractive, although as I said before, I have NO idea of anything yet.
Gusgus Gusgus Gusgus...People here do all the above. Screen printing lets you do all the above. There is a big learning curve there however, but don't let that stop you. There are books and videos on printing that you can buy, or maybe go to a shop outside your area and ask them to show you the process. It's a butt load to learn, but well worth it. You won't be limited.
Any specific questions about it can be had by asking. I would go look at a shop first, then decide. Most screen printers will let you peek in and take a look, as long as your not just down the street....you know...competition.

Hi Gusgus apart from this forum you should pay 40 bucks and get "how to print t-shirts for fun and profit "by scott and pat fresener a very good start point.
I think the t-shirt making process type is secondary to the t-shirt design market value. It pays to spend time researching the market before you decide what avenue you will take to make and sell the goods.
A lot of times, due to various types of designs and their applications, you may need to use various printing processes....
Trying out designs in places like CafePress and others will play a part in your market research.
Set short and long time goals....stay in focus and analize your achivements and let downs periodicaly.
