Default what do you do when you don't have their size?

ok, i was thinking the other day and was wondering how you would approach this situation.

lets say your selling t-shirts at a festival or street market and you run out of a certain size or design. then later, someone requests that same shirt. do you offer them something (whether it be a business card, coupon, website address, sticker...) to "right" the situation and still allow them access to buying the shirt.

my thought was, i would collect their e-mail address and then when I get more of that particular shirt in-stock, then send them an e-mail with a link to buy that shirt on our site. maybe even include a $2 off coupon or something because we didn't have the shirt when they originally wanted it.

what do you think, would we be losing to much money by offering the coupon? how often does this happen to you personally? - my thought is, i would rather offer a $2 or $3 coupon then lose that possible "loyal" cutomer for eternity.

that is a good idea. I would give them free shipping because they wouldnt have to pay that at the show.

I drop ship a lot of the clothing from my site, but some I print too. If something is ever out of stock I always drop them a $2-3 coupon depending on whether I print it. With out a doubt I think its fair. As far as being at an event..... I would get their e-mail and respond as soon as you get near a computer to give them some kind of time frame for when you can take care of them.
I don't do events, but if I did that's probably what I would do.

I agree (Chris) Free shipping is good too. I've done that with my clothing (cheaper to ship) my alternate manufacturer costs too much to comp. though. Those customers get coupons. lol

I think free shipping is the way to go. It doesn't have to be overnighted. one t-shirt in priority mail envelope is cheap.

Plus, if they are close to you (like if the event was local), you could ship one t-shirt via USPS First Class mail for about $2.50 or less so you won't be out too much money on free shipping and they'll still get the shirt fast.

I don't think you all need to go that far. I think a simple sorry that your out of stock on a specific size and offer to email him/her when you get the size in that they can order it off your website. or ask them if they want to prepay and you will ship for free!
