Tom...
WHAT STATE ARE YOU FROM?
Rodney asks you this because there is probably somebody on here from your state who could give you a run-down on where to look.
I'm in California and let me tell you, if I can get through the Los Angeles County DBA process, you can do it at your location.
Here in California, there are four main things you need (#1 is for any state):
1) Federal Tax ID # (EIN #) (
Internal Revenue Service)
2) If you are a Partnership, or a LLC, or any other type of entity other than an individual, you need to file an agreement. The documentation is available online and is easy to do. (
California Secretary of State - Business Portal)
3) Resale permit (we got ours from the State Board of Equalization). (
California State Board of Equalization) We actually walked into our local office and they did the paperwork for us immediately. Do not over-estimate your sales, or they may ask for a deposit.
4) If you plan to use a DBA (Doing Business As), you will need to file for that paperwork as well. (

ie: Eric & Debbie, DBA: "Jack Print & Design"
It is pretty easy to do, just follow the online directions.
Also, if you have 4 people running your company, I would follow Rodney's advice and see a lawyer. A few hundred dollars now, might save everyone a heartache later.
Eric
