I work as an artist in a company that buys major licenses and creates designs using style guides and photos but very little original art.. at least without a commercial name brand involved.
My boss is a firm believer in commercial market recognition in selling t-shirts & clothing and his success certainly proves he's correct but it's not clothing I'd buy.
Is there a strong market for stylish, illustrative designs that might also sell in fashionable boutiques rather than commercial t-shirt outlets?
Do you guys know of any companies that are successful doing original t-shirt / clothing art designs and have a link to a website that displays their products?
Based on successful trends, I'd very much like to create a series of original designs on my own and find a marketplace for them... (or at least convince my boss I deserve a big raise )

Yes, there's a market for it. There's a market for almost any type of t-shirt design.
The key is finding the buyers and advertising/marketing your product in front of those buyers to get sales.
Check out some of the various tradeshow websites and look at the exhibitors to get an idea of what brands and styles are out there:
Yeah, I like those shirts better than ours...profit-wise my boss thinks it's not worth it to him to design original new stuff for now over recognizable brands and characters, oh well.
Hopefully, I'll come up with something that'll catch on .
Thanks, I read about Affliction clothing on another thread... that's more of what I'm talking about.
Designs blending in with the overall clothing, not just art on a t-shirt.
If you guys know more companies like Affliction (but with more than skull & crossbone designs!) post them so I can check them out...thanx!
Mmm yes there are many brands similar to the Affliction style--Obey, Grn Apple Tree, Tank theory, fourth world, the imaginary foundation, monarchy, freshjive, beautiful/decay, etc. Most of these brands can be found on www.80spurple.com or digitalgravel.com
