How much should I charge for apparel brought into shop?
A client has the shirts that he wants printed and only needs me to print the apparel.
The client wants 6 sets (totaling 208 pieces) with 2 prints on each (same back screen for all tees). It's a total of 4 screens (splitting 2 graphics per screen) and is black ink on white tees.
Should take approx. 5 - 8 hours depending if a solo job or two people on two machines.
What should I charge per piece to just print the apparel.
Re: How much should I charge for apparel brought into shop?
That is touchy. I used to do it for $2.00 per shirt per one color print. They paid the set-up. For the other side, I would add one dollar. That is based on where I live however.

this would be considered contract printing. You might see about getting some of your competitors contract price lits and see what they charge. Compare to your normal charges and come up with a contract price list.
Re: How much should I charge for apparel brought into shop?
I'm just curious if this is a common request for screenprinters and/or if this is considered bad etiquette? I would think that the screenprinter might take offense, since it robs them of that extra $1-2 profit per shirt otherwise. But then again, they're still making a profit.
Re: How much should I charge for apparel brought into shop?
If they brought their own product in to be decorated, I would charge them according to what I normally make per hour x the number of hours plus screen charges. I would also tell them to plan on a 3% waste, things happen and garments get destroyed. good luck ... JB

It happens in many industries. Fairly common practice is to up your labor price when you aren't making any profit on the parts (shirts). I've seen the same thing in auto repair -- customer brings in the part, the repair shop will usually raise the labor cost a bit to make up the difference.
I've also seen a local screenprinter that specifically has seperate price lists for customer supplied garments and if the printer supplies the shirt. In this specific case, if the customer got shirts at good wholesale prices (S&S, etc.), it would still be cheaper for the customer to supply their own shirts -- but the printer wouldn't lose out too much either.

Pretty much how we do it. Separate pricing for Contract and custom clients.
If its a person off the street for aone time only type deal and they bring their own shirts we hav a 3rd price list thatis half way between our contract and custom price guides.

i think we are pretty much going through this at the moment, except i think the screen printer has gotten over on us. She charged us 5$ per shirt plus the screens, needless to say we ended up paying a lot even when bringing our own shirts, is it just me? or is that a rip off?

How many shirts did you have printed? What color shirts? How many colors in the design? How many print locations? All of those factors will influence the price.

That depends - was it a ten colour print?
More seriously, it does depend on number of colours and especially quantity, but that does sound more than likely on the high side.

My company tends to discourage customers from showing up with their own garments. However, at the same time you don't really want to turn someone away either. You never know, you do them this small favor this time and you could build a good relationship with the client. Make sure you let them know that you generally do not print on supplied goods.
As for pricing I usually charge per shirt and charge additionally for either screens our a flat hourly rate. Do what you feel comfortable with.
