tbiggs is so on the money about using an attorney for your first filing. I have a family member that works for the USPTO, but unfortunately he works in the patent department. Because everything is so different between patents and TM's he is of absolutely no help and he does not even know any of the TM people (can you imagine my frustration...so close, but so far). He did give me some packets of info. on what you need to do in order to self-file, but it is so lawyer/TM personnel oriented that I can't understand half of the instructions. I think they do that on purpose so they won't have to deal with the average joe. What I do understand is that the smallest error on the application will probably cause an appication to be rejected and you can wave bye-bye to your $.
