After watching a few videos online about spray painting my own designs onto shirts, I put together a stencil and tried it with white paint on a dark shirt. Disaster. The paint didn't seem to hold at all and the whole thing came out blurry. I'm not as worried about the blurry part, I think that happened because I was putting the can so close to the shirt because I couldn't see any paint sticking. Thought it might be the shirt but tried on another one (red) that I was tossing and it had the same problem. Am I outa luck with white spray paint on dark shirts and should I switch to applying ink by hand with a brush?
I also picked up black spray paint, which is what they used in the videos, so maybe I'll have more luck with it.
what is your stencil made of ?
Pick up some freezer paper and use that. draw you image on the non-glossy side cut it out and iron the glossy side down to the shirt. this will help with the blurry part by sticking to the shirt. after brushing the ink or spraying just peel off the paper and there you go. Note that this can only be done once with the paper.

Thanks for the reply and stencil idea Rexx. My main issue was with the spray paint, am I expectiing too much out of white spray paint on a dark t-shirt? It just didn't take at all and after spraying for a while I still don't have full coverage even though the white areas are pretty stiff.
Maybe I should switch to a fabric ink, but spray paint seems so much easier and can also produce some good effects.
Yes switch to fabric ink, i cant think of any reason to use spray paint to be honest. if you can pick up air bushing you cant get a spray effect like spray paint.

Re: how do I spray paint a t-shirt with a stencil?
it might also be the kind of spraypaint you are using..... montana is IMHO the best you can buy here in the states... but hard to find locally..it may work better for you... its not as wet as krylon or other store bought brands. and its super opaque.
