in my opinion, its very rare that a person starts a t-shirt company and becomes very successful with it all by themselves. alot of people dont realize this, but even johnny cupcakes had some help. by some stroke of luck, he was child hood friends with the lead singer of the "gym class hereoes", and the singer and his bandmates would often wear JC shirts while performing concerts...obviously getting free advertisement to 1000's of people cant hurt (especially from a famous person), and it probably sped up the process of JC's success by a few years.

im not saying that becoming very successful on your own cant be done, im just saying that its very rare and in my opinion (i could be, and hope that i am wrong) you need some sort of "boost" in the beginning...its not all hard work in my eyes, i believe that there is SOME element of luck that you need in order to really make it, as well as the hard work.

any thoughts?

I agree...but there are a few lines that didn't have any celebrity boosts and like you mentioned, it just took them a bit longer to get there...

obviously, if you got connections, why not utilize them to your benefit? I'm not condoning going up to some celebrity's door and stalking them, but if you know a friend of a friend of a friend's cousin's mother's brother, then why not give it a shot, ya know?

Brands that didn't have a celebrity boost probably had allot invested in marketing and promotion. Or they took years to build there credibility and get the name out.

if you have connections, why not use them?
Marketing and advertising is key with any brand or product. The more visible the brand the more successful it can be. Having a celebrity wearing your brand in public not only advertises the brand but also gives it credibility (if the celebrity is credible for your target market).

If you can get a celebrity following you'll most likely see an increase in sales, but it's not required. The celebrity has to be photographed wearing your shirt and the photograph has to be published in a magazine before you can really see a difference in sales, so it's a lot of steps to go through. You can still have a successful and profitable business without celebrities... but it might take a bit longer.
