I watched an interesting CSI NY episode this weekend. Here's the tivo description of the episode:
Quote:
A serial killer uses codes found on t-shirts as inspiration for his murders; Mac and Stella must unravel the hidden codes in order to stop him.
A few things were interesting about this episode:
One of the suspects in the case was this t-shirt seller who created a line of t-shirts that used semiology (which I learned from the episode is the study of signs and symbols and how their meaning is constructed).
These serialized t-shirts looked like the kind fashion shirts shown in this tutorial. Each t-shirt had a code and that code unlocked one clue in a fictional murder mystery story. Talk about some creative marketing!
They actually printed up t-shirts for the show. The t-shirt seller was selling them outside in Washington Square Park in NY (is this a real place where people sell t-shirts?). In the photos of the t-shirts, they all had a custom printed "neck tape", and a screen printed label (instead of a woven label). He was selling them for $29 each (although the detecives scoffed at the price )
The "fictional seller" had a website called edoc laundry. I just tested the website today and it looks like an actual REAL store with some coded t-shirts for sale. They even have a list of their offline stockists where you can buy the shirts in stores (a couple near me). So maybe they got some free press from CSI NY.
The detectives showed the seller some "knockoff" shirts from a brand called kodecon (CBS registered the kodecon.com domain name and redirected it to CBS)
During the episode, they bust in on the killers "workshop" where he was making the t-shirts, and we get to see his 4 station screen printing setup. It was interesting to see a screen printing press on "prime time". They even took the press back to the lab and screened a few t-shirts.
You can actually watch the whole episode on CBS's "innertube" online video thing here: CBS.com - Innertube
If you click the above video link it should open right to the "Hung Out to Dry" CSI NY episode and start playing after a little CBS commercial. If not, click on CSI NY Full Episodes and then on the "Hung out to Dry" episode. Warning, it's probably not safe for work and has some adult content (sex and violence).
All kinds of interesting t-shirt related things happening in the episode. Check it out and let me know what you think?
Yep, that's the one. I had actually written CSI: NY off (or was about to), but this was probably the most interesting episode I've seen in all of their seasons.
That's neat that edoc made the shirts shown in the show available on their website (and up to XXL ) edoc laundry
Rodney that episode was based off a real t-shirt company. There was a decent write up in Impressions Mag many months ago. That was a repeate episode Still pretty cool concept.
people do sell t shirts on the streets & outside the parks in many locations in NYC. I used to sell them on the streets in Soho every weekend & it was quite profitable.
Not directly related, but I remember recognizing a t-shirt on a TV show a few weeks/months ago. It wasn't important to the episode or anything, but it was still nifty to actually say "hey! I know that shirt!" =)
Always a good feeling. Ive seen my shirts all over the place. Waiting to see a design I did for the Egyptian Navy. I scan CNN all the time for a glimpse.
