It's possible to make money on only one design. Look at Tapout. Obviously, their success was based on hitting a very niche market. But they started with one design, sold them at events, and grew to what they are now.

The only way to grow and succeed is to sell. There is no shame in starting small and simple. If you have 1 product, sell 1 product. If you have 10 products, sell 10 products. If your product is good, and you can get it out to your target market, you will be fine.

There are pros and cons to sites like bigcartel. If you don't want to use it, you can build your own site instead. But any path you choose in this business will involve some level of competition. So you can't be concerned about that, you have to be aggressively confident in your product.
