I have a cute shirt design for girls/women looks better with words above the design. I currently have them as the name of the company but is that a bad idea to plaster the company name like that?

If it works well with the rest of the graphic, it's not a bad idea at all. Brands like Juicy Couture, Sinful and Ed Hardy all have the brand name prominent on their shirts. So it really comes down to your preference on what looks the best.

i agree, don't do it just to do it, but if it fits within the design and doesn't take away from the value of the design then go for it...

If your goal, however, is to build a brand and you see that brand being on all your shirts in the future, it may be a good idea to do that from the beginning to keep consistency
