I want to start using sales reps to bring in more biz. Does anyone do this and if so how does payment work. I was thinking of a % of everything they bring it but I don't know what % would work. your thoughts would be appreciated.
I would like them to bring in custom orders to me to print. Say a guy that does a lot in the sporting community getting some teams to order clothing. Or a guy that goes door to door.
oh, okay. i thought you were trying to sell a line to a retail store. so, you want them to bring business to you.? i saw another post about this awhile back. check the search button on the top left of the page. you should be able to find it. use sales reps, reps, etc. for your key words.
actually, now that i'm thinking about it...it was for reps to take their line out to retail outlets. not what you're looking for. however, it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the search anyway. you just might come up w/something.

I too have been considering this, I suck at selling lol I don't even know what percent would be fair to someone, let alone make sure I am making money as well. The wife hates the thought of giving any profit away LOL
I've put a couple of ads in the sales section of my local craigslist offering 20% commission. I mentioned most orders are around $400 (50 shirts x $8) which is $80 per sale commission. No responses yet.

I would say the percentage is pretty good. But the volume you are doing just won't be enticing to an experienced sales rep. Most reps are valuable based on their existing clients, so they want to rep brands that they can sell in high volume to existing clients. You may be better off finding a local college kid who is looking to get into sales and is ok with doing small volume just to learn the ropes and establish relationships.
Tim, good point. I think you're right. The $80 bucks didn't look good @ all initially. But, when you put that way in terms of the volume...the 20% looks & sounds better.
wow!!I am amazed by your response. You need to either get better @ sales and don't be afraid of hiring a sales person. "my wife hates the idea of giving away profit" wow!!! Do you have a business plan? You already know that you don't do well at sales so how do you expect to grow your business? I don't mean to sound critical at all. I want you to succeed but from your comments you seem to have some serious limitations.
Sales reps can be a great thing. I would say figure out if commision only or base salary plus commision. Figure what you can afford and you can always change it later to better suit your business. I would like to offer another alternative. Hire someone for production and you go out to sale more. No one is as passionate about your business as you and being a seemingly young business you it may better suit you to either hire a printer or contract out any orders you can't handle to a bigger screen printer. I would suggest the latter but make sure that you build a relationship with whoever you have print any orders you can't handle.
I do a fair bit of selling myself but now that the biz has grown I am finding it hard to have time for anything outside the shop. Between all the production and the business stuff I just don't have time to go door to door. I do see the value in meeting them myself though so maybe trying to get more production help. I would say 15% to 20% is about right. But I could see how if would be tough to keep someone motivated. There could be some small commissions there if they get lke $200 orders, that is only $30 for them. Alot of good info there thanks.
