Default Soft T-Shirt Fabric Trend

kk, so I am frustrated because of the soft t-shirts that every company is using. I remember a few years back when they all started switching to the new soft frilly material. Anyway I find it very uncomfortable. I compare a Pac Sun shirt I bought a few years back to one bought recently. They both say 100% but one is super soft and the other is firm and solid. The new fabric also doesn't last as long and is less durable than the old stuff. I think it has something to do with the starch level. Anyway what I am driving at is I want to know if there are any brand name shirt companys still using the good old stiff solid shirt fabrics.

Are you looking for pre-printed t-shirts that happen to use heavier, less soft t-shirts?

I think the length of time the t-shirts last is the same. It's still the same basic material.

People do have different preferences as to what type of t-shirts they like. Some (like myself) prefer softer t-shirts over more "firm", others prefer the less soft t-shirts. It's definitely not a one size fits all.

If you have a specific preference, I think it's just a matter of searching through the mall or somewhere else where you can touch and feel the t-shirts before you buy.

Some brands use different style t-shirts within the brand for the different designs they carry.

Yeah, AAA seems to be a good thick stiff shirt.

Yes, I am into surf skate style shirts but any name brand company that has stiff thick shirts would be nice to know about.

Some of the differences in 100% cotton t-shirts:
  • short versus long fibers -- sea island cotton and Egyptian cotton are extra long staple [ELS] cotton; they have LONG STRONG fibers; pima comes next with having long fibers
  • whether the cotton is combed or not -- combing the raw cotton gets rid of some of the short fibers and makes all the fibers go in the same direction, this makes the yarn feel smoother and softer
  • The density of the fabric -- the yarn/threads per inch will affect the durability and feel
So if you want to be able to say 100% cotton and still have the lowest manufacturing cost, you would use short-fiber, un-combed cotton yarn in a airy, non-dense knitting pattern.

However, if you want the best feeling fabric, you would do the reverse: long staple cotton, combed, dense knitting pattern.

With this economy, some of the t-shirt companies are trying to cut corners.

Has anyone tried an Egyptian Cotton Tshirts tee?
