Buying my own designed t-shirts from another company
Hi, i'm new to all this and i was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a place that could make my t-shirts for me at a good price. Me and a friend are only thinking about gettin into selling t-shirts so we only want to make like 9 shirts just to see if we can sell them around where we live( we don't want to spend to much money from the get-go just in case we don't profit at all) We just got back from like the only place here in town (i live in a small town) that does t-shirts..see all we want to do is do plain black shirts with just white words on them and a symbol we made up somewhere small on the shirt and thats it..it doesn't seem too complicated and he wanted 9 bucks a shirt..and the price went up to like 15 bucks a shirt if we had 2 words..basically it was only 9 bucks a shirt coz we gave him a short word..if we wanted to use any one of the longer words we wanted to do it would cost more..now our original intention was to try and sell these shirts for 10 bucks so we can at least make some profit..but damn.if this dude is charging us 9 a shirt and even more for some of our other ideas we're goin to have to sell some for 15..some for 20..maybe even 25 to make profit on a shirt that may cost us like 15 bucks to make to begin with..i mean it seems insane..we're not tryin to do crazy multi layered kaleidoscope 3-d pop art extravaganza t-shirts that should cost alot..we just want black t's with simple white words and our own lil symbol..small..put on there somewhere..theres got to be a more reasonable place..and i figured this is the place to ask..thanks for ur time

That is a crazy price! Looking at my screen printers prices, he charges 4.10 for the printing each for a dozen shirts. Then the shirts should cost you about 1.50 each. That would be $5.60 total. Find a new printer. He shouldnt be charging you more for two words than one either...thats crazy.

Most screen printers will have a minimum number of shirts that they will print because of the setup time a screen printing job takes.
I think you can find printers that will print 12 shirts, especially with just a one color design (white ink) on black t-shirts.
You are going to pay a lot more for the shirts since you are only buying 9 (or 12) than you would if you were buying 24, 50, 72, or 100+ You get price breaks for buying more shirts.
You could post a bid request at a place like http://boards.screenprinters.net (in their classifieds area). Just let them know all the details of what your potential order would be and they can quote you prices.
You can also do a googe search for screen printers and ask them about their minimums and get quotes from many places online that will ship the shirts to your location.

Yeah, more per colour, occasionally more if you have a heavy ink coverage vs. a light ink coverage (i.e. a 15x15" image vs. one word), but never more for one word vs. two.
Are these screenprinted or transferred letters? (transfers would make more sense since that would cost per letter)

i posted a classified ad on screenprinters.com..hopefully i'll get a reply with a decent price..I don't think the guy i went to was screen printing..i used to do screen printing in high school shop class and he definately had a different deal going on..I don't know much about the printing process but he had some thing where he'd put it on a computer and it'd come out some big printer looking thing..is that generally a more expensive process than screen printing? is that why he's sayin 9 a shirt and higher for more letters or words? would it be cheaper if i went the screen printin route...i like the price from the first reply i got..5:60 sounds reasonable and if i have to go 12 shirts rather than 9 to get that price than i'm willing. someone mentioned cafepress or somethin..but they didn't mention if they knew the price..just that it wouldn't be as high as the one i mentioned..what would it be like there for 9 shirts..like 7 bucks or somethin?

i have no idea what technique he was doing..i just got an email from a guy who said he'll do my 9 shirts for 6:50 each through screen printing and that size and amount of letters don't matter..its 6:50 total if its just a one color shirt with printin done on one location(the front)he won't charge sales tax...he'll waive the 25 dollar set up fee coz they have a special for their one year anniversary and he'll charge 8 dollars shippin for the whole shebang..i don't know too much about this business to know if thats a good deal or not.what do you guys think??

I think its an ok price. If you search the internet, you could find a better price though. I have seen places that are cheaper, but I couldnt reccomend them since I haven't used them.

Sounds like DTG printing. Expensive equipment, which is why he was charging so much.
