What type of material/fabric is used for tshirts? Different softness in 100% cotton tshirts?

Default What type of material/fabric is used for tshirts? Different softness in 100% cotton tshirts?

Hey everyone,

Sorry but I am new here. I was wondering how do I find out the type of material being used to manufacture tshirts? There are so many different kinds of softness length and weight of tshirts.

I am looking for material that is close to that of American Apparel or Uniqlo (Japanese Store). The softness is just right and doesnt shrink.

Also, having said that, does one know how much is it to manufacture in China with similar quality or grade like those of AA or Uniqlo? Also if anyone has any contacts in China to hook me up with them, it would be deeply appreciated.

Would really appreciate any kind advice.

Thank you!!

The extra softness that you find in t-shirts by AA is due to the fabric being ringspun. There are benefits in using ringspun cotton but there are also cons.T-shirts made of ringspun cotton are often lighter in weight than that of standard cotton t-shirts,but this is purely a matter of preference.

Depending on your location, China may not be the ideal place to source out products. Chinese manufacturers are often disinterested in doing business with small companies and will often demand high minimums, you must also take into account of shipping cost and taxes which may be imposed by your country or state. I'd suggest sourcing blank t-shirt suppliers and local screen-printers if you are looking to start up a brand.

Hey "iluvtees"

Thank you so much for your advice. But perhaps could you kindly elaborate on what the cons of ringspun tshirts? I mean yes they are alot lighter and softer, however not to the point of being as thin as those like "junk food".

I am looking for vendors who carry blank tshirts however, i do reside in Asia. So sourcing for material which is located in the US can be a little wee bit difficult. Could you perhaps direct me to a website besides AA that ships or sends to Singapore on a relatively reasonable price?

Also having said that, I do understand that different tshirts consist of different materials. Some of them have polyester and cotton mixed. For me personally, I am nonchalant about the nitty picky of materials, as long as it feels comfortable that would suffice. Having said that, I cannot be going around "feeling" tshirts. Hence the benchmark for material would be AA since it is widely available. But there are just too costly.

Thank you so much for all your help.

I do hope to hear from you soon!!

Cons of ringspun cotton are very minor, but through personal experience I have noticed that the fabric tends to pill a lot more easier during close examination. However this may not be with all cases. The price of ringspun t-shirts are also a lot more expensive.

If you insist on using American Apparel, you can try using this site: Mens American Apparel T Shirts & Tank Tops T-shirts - American Standard

Seeing that you are located in Singapore, there should be many t-shirt manufacturers in Asia that can supply t-shirts at reasonable rates, however this will depend on your circumstances and purchasing power. It would also be wise to check out samples.Maybe you could try contacting some local screen-printers as they usually have links to many t-shirt wholesalers(perhaps even AA).

Hi kungpaofu,
I'm in SG as well and am looking to print a small range of Tshirts on Uniqlo-quality tees in small quantities just to test the local market. Have been to corporate gift companies / Tshirt printing companies like Wah Mee and Ministry of Print (MOP) to feel their shirts but they aren't the ringspun cotton types - just 100% cotton.

I found two shops in Peninsula Shopping Centre basement that bring in blanks from American Apparel, Alternative Apparel, Gildan and Anvil. Alternative Apparel feels quite close to the Uniqlo ones but am not sure which ones are the most popular blanks to be used especially in SG but prices are quite steep if you don't buy in bulk.

Hello Halftone,

Thank you for the message. I have been looking high and low as well.... Maybe perhaps I can help you and we can combine our resources? Maybe we can combine our orders as well in order to lower the pricing?

What are you exactly looking for? MOP prints their shirts on AA quality t-shirts. I dont know about Wah Mee. BUt I have a contact which has anvil, gildans,AA tshirts... perhaps I can link you up with him.

Also... have you found a printer that can do good quality printing on the tshirts???

are u planning on selling ur shirts or just print for urself?? Hope i can be of assistance.

also in SG, i do not know which ones are most popular. this is all subjective. depends on the person. what they like and whatnot. however, having said that, anvil, gildans 64000, AA and alternative apparel all are pretty similar to me. just depends on the cut.

Hi kungpaofu,

Good idea, we can pool resources. I am looking to print a small run of 200 white/black silkscreen tshirts as a start. Hoping to just use one party for the tshirt supplies and print as ordering the blanks myself is very expensive.

I found another printer called IE Express at Parklane, went down to check out their blank shirts. Apparently they do bring in the Hanes Beefy Tee, Anvil, Gildan and Fruit of the Loom. Quite a hard choice to make as all of them feel almost the same. I might be going for a mix of Anvil and the Hanes Beefy Tee.
You can check out the catalog on their site (:: Imprinted Express :: T-Shirts & T-Shirts Printing).

Does your contact bring in just the shirts.. and at a good price? I am quite tempted to go with this IE Express but I don't know of anyone who has used them before so I can't vouch for quality. Do you know of anyone who uses MOP's services?

Friend of mine got Wah Mee to do a few test silk screen prints in 3 colours and they came out pretty ok but their shirts are those used for class tshirts.. so the cutting, especially for the sleeves is quite wide in my opinion.

There are a few more corporate gift companies like Kratos Garments (www.kratos.com.sg/ ) , Tee Workshop (www.teeworkshop.com/) and Passion (Home - Passion) but it's quite time consuming to check them out individually.

if you contact a manufacturer and ask for samples of their fabric, they will most likely send it to you, along with a description of each fabric. that way you can see how each type of fabric feels and what it looks like.

Hello Tees for Change,

Could you perhaps share the contacts of these manufacturers? I have been looking high and low and still cannot find the right people. I emailed a couple also with no response. Perhaps you could share some light??

Thanks

Hello I checked out the websites you mentioned below. For these guys do you know if they print on the t-shirts as well? Also why kind of print do they do? Because I am looking for printers that are willing or have printed on Bamboo Material before. Hmm I have been looking high and low and i realise SG is too small and the manufacturers here or printers do not have the "expertise" to print on Bamboo. Perhaps I might be wrong. Or even if they do, they charge exhuberant prices.

Hi I am also looking for printers and agreed with Kungpaofu that they are some printing for class tshirts too. Do both of you have your own shops to sell your own tshirt brand?

I am looking for distributor to sell mine. We can cooperate together on both printing, resources if both of you dont mind.

Have you hear of praise my tee? I quite like their designs. Their materials not bad too. Anyone knows what type of materials are they using?

They are located at Far East Plaza.
