Want to ask, how does a company like Affliction get their shirts to have the "tears" around the neck and cuffs, meaning, is it a manual or other automated process?
I'm thinking that they've contracted a company to make this unique type shirt for them and would like to know of any such unique shirt manufacturers for smaller businesses (like myself) exist?

I'm not sure what you mean by "manual or other automated process". Are you asking if they distress each shirt by hand? If so, I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

It's very possible that they are having their own blanks made. You can look up the RN# on the tag to see what manufacturer is listed.
There are some companies that offer distressed blanks that have torn/frayed edges. I think Continental has some.

Are you looking for large or small quantities of distressed shirts?
If small, you could cut up a stack of shirts and wash/dry them with rocks and other 'items' to create your own distressed T's. A few spatters of bleach would knock out some color. It might be kind of fun!
I would find a way to use an old washer/dryer instead of you own set.
Hey honey, what is banging in the dryer? (oops)
It's got freyed edges around the hem and looks like the t-shirt you're describing.
AlternativeApparel will also make custom blank t-shirts to your specification (as will other manufacturers like Continental, etc)
Hi Rodney - Yep, that's what I'm looking for in the torn style. I will contact them about custom shirts. I've also contacted American Apparel too and awaiting a reply.
I know I'll sound like the old bag that I am saying this, but how about the old fashioned way - wash and wear it till the seams fray! Maybe its the seamstress in me but when I see frayed edges, open seams, long threads - I'm running for the fraycheck and scissors, guess I don't get it : p

I can see your point too VC! Actually, I seem to like the "fake" torn/frayed edge look.
I noticed that some other companies pointed out in another thread feature tees that look like they've been drug through mud 'n dirt and has graphics on the front and back. I guess some people like looking as though they've been through a fight, a trek or want to look truly rugged.
Let me add to this message that I've never seen a woman wear (or even a female model with) the dirty looking shirts. Is it stereotyping to think that only guys like the "drugged through the mud look?"
reffering back to the roughed edges on the hem sleeve and collars of affliciton type clothing, on afflictions online store and other sources i found it does state that they are grinded and ive found in trade papers online about how affliction started and itr said in various different 1s they are distressed by hand.? so iassume they will bedone by the ppl who make the shirt up.
