Default Pricing on an "A"

I just signed up with a wholesale supplier and am waiting for my account to be activated. They cannot quote me wholesale prices until my account is active (24-48 hours) but the person I spoke to said their wholesale prices are "on an A" relative to their retail prices.

Can someone clarify this for me? I wouldn't mind waiting for my account to be active except that I'm quoting a rush job.

I have never heard the term. Why not just call him back and ask what it means?

In the advertising specialty and promotional item business selling on an "a" means 50% commission.

But I would check with them to make sure,

I'm sure this is what it is then. As soon as my account is active I'll compare their wholsale vs. retail prices and report back. Thanks for the info!

To splathead, when I asked for their wholesale pricing she told me that until my account was active, the most she could say was that their retail prices were listed on their website and that their wholesale pricing was on an 'a' relative to retail. She asked how long I had been in the business and said something to an effect that made me think it was an industry term.

I've never heard the term before, but my guess is that is refers to the pyramid shape of a capital A rather than standing for a word.

Having been in the advertising specialty and promotional item business for around 18 years I can tell you it doesn't stand for anything. It's just a way for us to keep track of the commission across the 1000's of different catalogs from different suppliers and 1,000,000's of items we sell. Sometimes you will see a higher set of letters, but here is the code:

A B C D E F G
P Q R S T U V

50 45 40 35 30 25 20 (% commission)

I also seems to me that C/R is the most common. You can also mark up the items more and increase your commission.

EDIT: The spacing didn't come through when it published, but I'm sure you get the idea that it is supposed to be columns.
