i'm ready to get started, but so many of the wholesalers mentioned on the forum and other places require resale certificates and other info. (s&s activewear, georgiatees, sanmar, etc.) i don't have one yet and i'm trying to get around that for a while.
can anyone suggest reliable, trustworhy wholesale companies for good quality/budget tees? i would love to have something comparable to M&O knits, quality- and price-wise. 100% cotton is my preference.
i could go with blankshirtstore.com, but i haven't see anyone talk about them. i want to be sure i'm not getting seconds or anything.

I ordered from Blank Shirts a few times before I got my sales tax license; they are reasonable on price (not as cheap as you'll get with a license, of course) and I didn't have any problem with the shirts.

fast delivery and price breaks on volume. But get the sellers certificate first chance you get.

If you have sales tax in your state then you need a sellers permit. Everyone expects to pay sales tax and you not charging it puts you at more risk than it is worth. You do not have to collect sales tax for sales in states that you do not have a physical presence.
That said, any wholesaler outside of your state probably will not require the permit to sell to you tax free.

No, there are lots that will require it, even if they are not in your state.
Most of them use it as a way to make sure that you are a legitimate reseller, and not just someone wanting wholesale pricing. Also, they must keep accurate records, and you having a resale# aids them in that endeavor.

Unless you are selling to someone who is going to sell retail. The you are the wholesaler or distributor. But you need to collect their sellers permit and keep on record.

thanks, everyone! well, the first shirts are going to go in stores that are owned by folks we know, so things could be loosey goosey in the beginning. but you guys made it clear that i need to get one, so i'll start working on that.
i've been to www.blankshirts.com and it seems like they require a certificate, too. the site i was referring to was www.blankshirtstore.com. they seem to not require a certificate, but i didn't see any posts saying they were okay.
i checked out presentation and they seem fine, but they don't have some of the shirts i was considering. but i'll go back and check them again.
You just choose your shirts, pay, and they ship them to you. Click on the link that says resellers. They never ask you for your resale#, nor do they ever mention one.

You will find most won't despite what you may have been told. If you are in The Peoples Republic of California then you will find you need to have one for businesses that are here also.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this. I said that there are lots that will require it, implying that there are some that won't. As for most will not, I don't know.
So when you say "despite what you may have been told", you are assuming that the companies that I have done business with lied about needing my resale number. Which also implies that you know what companies I have done business with.
I don't think you are in a position to argue either of those points.
I would love some clarification on what you mean.
Because, despite what you may believe, there are definitely companies that will require you to have a resale number, regardless of whether you are in their state in order to do business with them.
As far as the number of these companies, I don't think there is any authoritative list as to how many do, and how many don't.

wow! okay! thanks! this is very informative. t-bot, too bad i'm not in canada, but i'm close at the moment. i'm in detroit right across the river. i'm visiting my family. i live most of the year in new york city.
okay, i may have been scared off by the "resellers enter here" sign on blankshirts, so i'll try again. they have good prices, so that's cool with me.
after reading the posts last night, i looked at a new york resale certificate. whew! well, this is my first foray into starting a biz, so i'm new to a lot of this. i took a quick gander at it and it seemed confusing. i'll look at it again.
but this brings to me to another question. i'm in new york, but my brother--a long-time photographer--is now on board. see, i'm an actor/writer/vocalist so i'm coming in from the creative end. got a lot to learn, but i've got a lot of slogans. so now we planning to get a silk screening machine (is it hard to learn to do it well?) within the next week or so and everything will be done from here in detroit. i'm mentioning this because now i'm wondering do we have to get an RC in new york AND in michigan? or will one suffice for the entire country? i haven't a clue. pls. forgive.
