Hey guys, I know there is already a thread like this somewhere, but i have a specific situation to ask you all about. I am having 80 tees screenprinted with a design I made for classmates of mine. I know the Beefy T is better quality, but I have a profit predicament. If I print the shirts on Gildan Ultra Cotton tees, I profit $240, but if I print them on the Beefy T, I only profit $80. Anyone have suggestions on what to do?
Well, I think that you just answered your own question. Where are you sourcing your tees from and also, why is your profit margin so low on the Hanes? Did you under bid your work?
Hope you can get it worked out, I have not worked with Gildan shirts before, but try AAA, or even fruit of the loom.
I don't know price points on the shirts off hand, but depending on what you're doing for your classmate, they may not want such a high quality shirt. But that is up to you in getting more business and then you can charge more the next time.
I use Hanes BT's for my line, but when I do side job I use the Gildan.
I dont know where you are getting your shirts but the difference between hanes BT's and Gildan ultra shouldnt create a drastic drop in profit loss as you stated
As far as quality comparison goes, If you remove the label from both shirts and compare weight, thickness and quality, I doubt you would be able to tell which one is which.
I only use Beefy T's when specifically requested by a client. Otherwise, I use Gildan or Anvil. They all have the same quality.
What's interesting though is Hanes makes a 6.1 oz tagless tee. And you would think it would be the same as the 6.1 oz Beefy T. But it's not. It's not as thick as the Beefy. Go figure.
We use Gildan Ultra Cotton 6.1 oz for all of our custom work unless specifically requested for something else by the customer. We charge a $2.00 per shirt premium for Beefy T's when requested to cover the extra cost for the shirt and additional shipping since where I get the Beefy T's is not where I typically order my shirts.
In most cases..the Gildan will be just fine. The Beefy T is a ringspun cotton vs. a jeerzy cotton so it will be softer feeling but both will work just fine otherwise.

I think many customers could tell the difference because the Hanes Beefy Tee is ringspun cotton while the Gildan Ultra is not.
I could tell with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back.

There's a pricing difference with the Hanes Beefy, but it shouldn't be THAT much. I'd find a new screen printer or supplier (and go with the Hanes Beefy).
Better yet, find a supplier for the M & O Knits t-shirts and use those instead. I like them better than the Hanes Beefy and they are just as soft (and much less expensive).
Go with the Gildan!!!!. I'm in the process of selling my own designs and I bought both shirts. The hanes shrunk 2.5 inches and the neck lost its shape after 3 washing. Also both shirts were line dried. Go with the Gildan.

+1
i compare it to buying crappy bead sheets, I hate to sleep at hotels or such because they buy bed sheets in bulk and lower grade to what I am used to. Ringspun compared to regular jersey cotton T's make a big difference.
I just got some Gildan shirts for a friends plastering comany. He gave me one when I was done with the order, as soon as I put it on it felt stiff and rough, compared to hanes BT shirts when I first throw one on.

Thanks everyone
Yes, more profit is better. The main difference in the shirt is the name. The weight is the same. We use the Ultra Cotton shirt almost exclusively and haven't had any complaints.

Checking my supplier, the whites are both [the same price]
There must be a sale on the white hanes because they are not usually the same price.

Reason: removed specific pricing - wholesalers have asked not to have their pricing posted in public forums
