Thumbs down import quota on bamboo

Has anyone heard anything about quota on bamboo fabrics rising (actually tripling) for anything imported into the US. Some companies have had to raise their prices or add some kind of surcharge. It will certainly effect cost of blanks.
Just a heads up.

The first I heard about it was from a representative from your company.

The only information I found online was old information about there being no quotas on imported bamboo fabric.

Do you have any links to where we could read more about it. Which government agency would have info on it?

Cost was already one of the downsides of bamboo, it will be sad if this makes it even more of an issue. Seems like they would want to do just the opposite for more "green" fabric.

Except it's not that kind of green the government is concerned about.

I hope that they wouldn't slap a quota on something like bamboo fibre that is not readily available in this part the world.

I don't know if the quota applies to sales in Canada (probably not), but I definitely got hit with it with a recent bamboo t-shirt order (coming from canada INTO the US.)

What was the penalty? Was your order a substantial quantity or a few shirts?

OK, Maybe I can shed some light on this issue.
The core issue behind everything is that the US customs office has reclassified bamboo as a man-made fibre because it is extruded (like rayon) and not spun.
This decision resulted in duties jumping from 16% to 32%. Now, you would think that would be enough protection for the American producers of man-made fibres (like nylon and polyester) but US customs also demands that quota be purchased for every bamboo garment imported. As everyone knows, bamboo has been riding a wave of popularity and this has put a strain on the availability of raw materials and has resulted in the Chinese Export office increasing the cost of quota from $6.00/dozen to $17.00/dozen.

This is something that should be resolved, one way or the other, within a 4 - 6 month period. If there are companies shipping without having to pay (which I have heard) they are flying under the radar and will be caught soon.

It added about 1.50 per shirt. Still, the pricing was reasonable for bamboo shirts, just not "as" reasonable as I was used to getting

The order was about 150 shirts I think.
