Default Rice Bag Shirts

Does anyone know what type of fabric this "rice sack" t-shirt is made out of? I've seen these sold in Hawaii and was wondering if this fabric is easy to come by.

Thanks,

David

Are you looking for printed or unprinted fabric?

Hi David,

It looks like "calico", Undyed cotton sort of fabric. I am not sure.... but the color and the usage(rice sacks) says so. mostly used by hand painting people who put their designs on with fabric paint, it is more pupular around asia.

That's a pretty cool garment. Along similar lines I have a book that includes a photo of a man in a (well tailored) suit made from hessian sacks during wartime rationing.

...that doesn't help at all, but I think it's kind of cool.

That would make sense. I suck at identifying things from photos, but it's certainly consistent. Calico is basically the cheapest fabric available, so if you're going to use fabric for packaging it's the obvious choice.

It's generally very thin, which that garment does appear to be.

Readily available anywhere though; while it's relatively rare to make finished garments out of it in the west, it's a very common fabric and still available in pretty much all fabric stores.

Thanks for the help all. I really appreciate the tip on the type of fabric. Very interesting that people tend to paint directly on the fabric in areas of Asia!

I'm looking to recreate something very similar to the rice bag shirt pictured above. (I don't think I'll be hand painting everything, however.) The only problem I'm seeing with this fabric is, while unique, difficult to make more modern fits with, given that it isn't elastic at all. Does anyone think this fabric could be blended with another material that could help remedy this problem?

- David

it will be more of a SHIRT rather than a t-shirt with this fabric, it would only blend with another rigid fabric and would never look good with any elastic or single jersy (T-shirt fabric) type of meterial, yet you could make your designs a size up meaning, if you fit into Medium, go for a Large.
hope it helps.
