Default Do you REALLY need fashion design school for your own line?...

Hi, I tried (and quit) many times fashion design college. I'm NOT technical person who can make patterns and samples, BUT I can pay people to do those steps for me. I like the design-creation aspect, thats what I do. Like can't I just pay good working professionals to make my patterns, do my samples and make my designs? Thats what Johnny Cupcakes did from the looks of it. And there seems to be alot of leads fo good clothing manufacturers on here with set sizes for their garments, which is great.

Nope why would you think you did?

It might help some, but it's certainly possible without one. Like you said, it's been done before

Sure can.

Hopefully others will post some input and opinions as to whether they think it's necessary or beneficial....

Recognize this logo? Jean Paul Gaultier never went to design school.

The many fashion labels run by people who never attended a fashion or design school is proof that it's not necessary. But, it really really helps.

It also depends what you mean by "own line"... if you just mean a t-shirt line then hell no.

Look at Mac Ecko, if im not mistaken, he started his line of clothing in or right out of high school with the concept of bringing "street art" to clothing. If I remember correctly a few years ago his company reported sales of over 1 billion dollars in a year.

Love him or hate him... you can't ignore him.

Someone please correct me if im being ignorant, but this is what I have read over the years.

You don't need a degree to do anything (I think that's something I learned while actually acquiring mine). Someone gave me the actual statistic the other day and I'm pretty sure I don't quote with a 100% accuracy, but I think 8 of the top 10 individuals on Forbes money list don't have a degree whatsoever.
