Hello all ; after updating my computer to one powered by Windows 7 I found that my Brother GT 541 would not communicate with it. After several trips to the " geeks " at Best Buy and calls to my Brother sales rep , I was sent the 541 's printer driver for the Vista version of Windows, which like Windows 7 , is a 64 bit operating system. Once installed the printer was once again up and running .
Hope this info helps and saves you some time .

Hi all,

I got a question that I can't seem to find an answer to:

Basically Ive seen some videos of printing large designs on their custom made platens (I' not sure if I'm allowed to say whom so just in case this message doesn't get released - I wont say), but I know there has been posts about them. I can imagine creating my own platen to fit my machine, but I can't work out how they set up the graphic side of things on the computer. So the beginning bit about arranging the artwork etc for the machine to read

One of the videos shows the guy turning the platen around and then hitting the print button, but the design is continuing from where it originally stopped...(if that makes sense!!??)

I'm sure that there's others who have thought about it or discussed that, so I'm wondering if there is a post or something that I've missed out on. Can any budding Brother users update me!!??....

Let me start with a little background. A month or so ago my black print head stopped printing right. It was streaking, and just wouldn't print. I did everything the support guy at brother could think of and nothing worked, so we finally bought a new head. About two weeks later the yellow started doing the same thing. I've since found out that other people have this problem, and it may be caused by mixing brother and sawgrass inks, without flushing the line first, or from syringing ink out of empty cartridges. I'm not sure which, but I did both things on the colors that went out.
Anyways, I didn't want to spend another grand on a new head again, and I had the old black head that was supposedly broken, so I decided to mess with it.
I read in another thread someone suggested using simple green, but they had never tried it on a brother head. I tried it, and it worked.
Heres what I did:
Materials: Syringe, simple green(SG), water, some kind of tube to make the syringe fit onto the head better.
-Dilute the SG, I didn't measure exactly how much, i just sprayed a little bit into water.
-let the head sit in the SG, no more than half an inch. You just need enough to cover the nozzles. Leave it for a few min.
-Swirl it around to break up any clogs(I don't know if this does anything, but it was in the instructions i followed)
-Use the syringe to push SG(diluted) through the print head. Keep doing this repeatedly until you can see all the nozzles spraying just the SG.
Repeat any steps as needed until it seems like the head is as clean as it'll get, then put it into the machine. After putting the head back in, I ran an initial cleaning, then about 7 or so powerful cleanings before it started printing completely right. Now it looks perfect though.

Note that you might not have to work as hard cleaning the head if you're using it for the same color. I was cleaning a black head to be used with yellow, so i needed to get all the black in off the head.

I hope this will help someone else who had this problem, and save you from buying a ridiculously expensive head when yours is still fine.

After having used the gt-541 for a while, and although I'm quite happy with the work flow it allows, I'm starting to get paranoid with the black ink. The washability I'm getting is definitely sub par when printing big areas of solid black; very noticeable wear appears after very few washes ( 2 or 3).
In todays world with most people throwing jeans and t-shirts in the washing machine together, I'm finding some clients complaining. My own tests do not hold up too well to a true day to day use of the t-shirts I print, and is mostly black ink that goes first with wear and tear. Anyone feels the same, and have you had better experiences with other inksets or machines? i usually print at level 8,does printing at 9 or 10 seem to improve this issue for you? thank's

I'm so used to the quality of my prints with plastisol I just hate to see prints go so fast.

I'll post a couple of pictures tomorrow.

I had a customer order a large number of custom golf towels, a few weeks ago. I had never printed on golf towels, for a customer, so I wasn't sure how it was going to go. I picked up a few towels from my local blank supplier (I used Staton Wholesale, but I am sure TSC Apparel, SanMar, and all the big guys carry them) and got to work. The customer supplied a small logo, and wanted me to add a simple ruler along the edge of the towels, since they would be used for a major fishing event and the guys wanted to measure the fish they caught. I was a little uncertain about running an image along the edge of the towels, but I gave it a shot; it worked great! I simply lined up the edge of the towel to the edge of the platen, spent about 10 seconds making sure they're straight, then hit print!

Benefits of towel printing:

- Towels are cheap. Depending on the size / style you get, they are often less than t-shirts.
- Most people like white towels; you don't have to figure out how to print on darks.
- Ink is cheap! Even if they cover a lot of the towel, the small golf towels are smaller than t-shirts, so there is less space to decorate. This equates to less cost, and more profit! If the client wants a larger towel, and you are utilizing the full 14" x 16" print area, then you would charge a higher premium, of course.
- Print time isn't bad.... Even though I recommend printing towels in UNI DIRECTIONAL MODE (to accommodate the higher level of surface texture on the substrate), the print time is decent because of the smaller print area.

This is how the fish towels came out:

The customer loved them, and I was inspired, so I decided to do a few more samples:

Oh yeah, and not that it matters, but this artwork was prepared in CMYK mode, and printed from Photoshop using prepared CMYK spot colors that I have optimized over time: :D

I read a few months ago about using a syringe to suck the leftover ink out of the cartridges in order to use all that extra ink. I didn't try it for awhile, but one day I really needed to finish an order but was out of black ink, so I used the syringe technique and it worked and I finished the order. Not to long after that though, my black started streaking and I couldn't get a consistent print, even after putting a brand new cartridge in. The tech support guy couldn't figure anything out, so I got a new print head.

Last week I was in the same situation but with yellow ink. I used a syringe to suck out ink, and it worked great. Now I just got a new yellow cartridge, and it's not printing right even with a full cartridge. I've manually cleaned everything, and I even ran two initial cleans, along with many powerful head cleanings. Nothing's fixed it.

Is there a chance that using a syringe on the cartridge is accidentally making the hole a little too big so a tiny bit of air can get in? And if so, will air in the line cause the print head to break?
I've run a few initial cleanings and watched a few small air bubbles be pushed out of the line, so I know there's no more air, and I've got a fresh cartridge in. Anyone have this problem?
